I've just done a quick calculation and discovered my BMI is just over 30. I am officially OBESE at 14st 12lbs and 5'9". Yikes!!!
Now I certainly don't feel it and we all know these charts are a bit iffy for some people eg there are loads of top class sports people who are obese on the BMI scale.
However, still a bit of a shock so action is needed.
Now I'm not stuck in terms of knowing what to do or how to do it, but I keep getting started and drift back in to slovenly ways after 2 or 3 runs (well I call them runs, but I'm talking about a couple of miles at 10mins/mile!).
As a bit of background it wasn't always this way - I used to train regularly and have the following best times: 5k 16:06, 10k 33:30, 10 miles 55:36, 1/2 marathon 1:12
and marathon 2:48, hence the knowing what to do and how to do it.
There was a point though when I just decided to have a few months living normally, eating and drinking like normal people do. Which is fine but weight balloons, obviously, when your body is used to burning up a hell of a lot more calories.
Now that few months somehow seems to have become several years (how did that happen? Where did all the time go?).
So now ideally I aim to get fit enough to do a few road races again and feel fit (no better feeling) and get to 11 - 11.5 st, although the weight doesn't matter - that sorts itself out if training properly.
Anyway, I feel better now and I haven't a clue what I want except referring back to the thread title!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Go for it Rich....... there are allsorts of runners on here, from walkers doing mara distance to full on marathon runners and everything in between......
You sound like you know what you need to do, and will achieve it no probs... Just remember that it's okay to have some middle ground and you may not meet the heady speeds of your PB's again, although maybe you will in time, but don't use them as a stick to beat yourself with!
Stick with us, ask any questions, report back here from time to time (or everytime if you like, i know i do!!) (it's a great motivator), and also, as you are a bit of a pro, prepare to be pumped for advice/recommendations etc.... as we do like to ask questions!
BMI's are overrated anyway!!
<Maz strums her fingers on the desk, waiting for Richoneday's first run report>
(Oh dear, i'm turning into Sally! One run in 2 weeks, and suddenly i've gone bossy!!)I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
Thanks for that Maz.
I agree BMI are well overrated, unless they are under 25 then I think they're great!
You're quite right, PBs weren't exactly on my mind at the mo unless it stands for Pot Belly!
So, anyway, I'll be out tomorrow for a little one and spend 4 weeks getting 4 runs a week in. Then I'll be able to get a feel for what sort of medium term targets to set.
Whatever I say I'm going to do, I want some serious abuse on here if I don't do it and haven't got a good excuse.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I forgot that runners are such nice people!
It has also just dawned on me that I've just entered the ranks of the veterans. So, Im an OBESE VETERAN.
!!!!!! I can't be having that - if I needed motivation, I've now got it.
This is now project transformation from Obese Veteran to Lean Mean Running Machine in lots of not so easy steps. :rotfl:Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

not exacted running related but wanted to update you all with my swimming lessons escapade!
It was FABULOUS!!!!! I loved it, loved it, loved it!!! i wanna do it again.......
today!!
To give some background to anyone that missed it, i can swim but not very fast or effectively, and can now be outswam by my DD of 7.5years... admittedly she is very good for her age... and OH swims like a fish too, so i was feeling left behind......
I signed up for "people who can swim a little bit and aren't !!!!!! scared of the water adults class" - first session last night, for 7 weeks.
I was hoping to improve my strokes in general but mostly learn to be able to submerge my face and breathe......
the teacher was ace, she was plain and average looking (not some leggy norweigen babe, phew!), the class was small, 5 people... there were 2 marions (what are the odds!!?) (FYI - marion is my sunday name) so i said for simplicity please call me Maz, that made me feel very at ease, as all my fave peeps call me Maz....
We practiced breast stroke with face in the water, i had remembered goggles but didn't get a noseclip yet. I was swimming widths, and later on lengths with a really good push n glide face in, and coming up for air, going back down like crazy!! it was ace! so liberating!!!! To be honest, my arms n legs were all over the place i think, as i was concentrating on my breathing mostly... but i felt like i made so much progress!!!
YAY me!! i feel like a right proper swimmer! a long way to go, but i feel great!
I actually fell on my bum in the showers, noone saw thank goodness! but i have a mahoosive bruise on my not inconsiderable thigh! ouch!
Runchum is coming tonight, hoping for another 2 miles again, will update....
Thanks for listening/reading my rambles!! i promise to calm down soon!!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
Well done Maz. Swimming is great for cardiovascular exercise (and the calorie burning that goes with it) and for muscle toning.
I did my last pre-Nike-10k Run this morning, 5.5K, pace of around 4'40, so I think I can manage 10k in under 50 minutes. Wish me luck for Sunday!
Rich, you said you've done 10k in 33:30? Was that on track or road racing?Either way very impressive.
I'm starting with Paula Radcliffe on Sunday. I say "starting" because I expect the start is the last I'll see of her for about 50 minutes!Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Good stuff Maz,
Swimming is a great complimentary activity to running and enables you to keep fit when for whatever reason you are unable to do load bearing exercise. (for instance, you might have slipped in the shower and damaged your leg or something daft like that).
I can't share your glee about the instructor not being a blonde swedish babe though!
Paula Radcliffe, since she has been mentioned, does a fair bit of swimming in her training mix.
beinerts,
That 33:30 was on the roads. It was actually the Edinburgh 10K, taking in Arthur's Seat, Princes Street and starting/finishing in Meadowbank Stadium - so a nice, interesting route.
What are you doing on Sunday? You will be rubbing shoulders with the most talented female road runner of all time imo. Its so ironic that the general public think she's a quitter! Anyway, have a good one.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

You guys are ace....
I just wanted to say that....
I'll take my big ole bruised thighs outta here now..!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
'Esteemed proper runners' ROFLMAO !!
Remember my main aim at the moment to change from being an Obese Veteran to an Overweight veteran.
