    'Esteemed proper runners' ROFLMAO !!

Remember my main aim at the moment to change from being an Obese Veteran to an Overweight veteran.

Btw How do you fall on your bum and end up with a bruise on your thigh?

i think i went into self preservation mode and to stop myself landing on my bum and maybe hitting my head if i ended up flat out, i seemed to morph onto my side, hence bruise on thigh....

worst bit was i then had to go onto all fours to get myself up again, and in a swimming cossie, so not lady like and not a pretty sight! lol!!!!!!!

Well done Maz. Swimming is great for cardiovascular exercise (and the calorie burning that goes with it) and for muscle toning.

I did my last pre-Nike-10k Run this morning, 5.5K, pace of around 4'40, so I think I can manage 10k in under 50 minutes. Wish me luck for Sunday!

Rich, you said you've done 10k in 33:30? Was that on track or road racing?Either way very impressive.

I'm starting with Paula Radcliffe on Sunday. I say "starting" because I expect the start is the last I'll see of her for about 50 minutes!

Get you!!! hob nobbing with the stars!!!!!!!

Good luck mate!!!!!! not that i think you'll need it!

    Rich,

Are you a bloke? Because 33:30 is only 3 minutes behind Paula's world record, so if you're a woman you'd have been able to go pro! I'm assuming you are, but it's still impressive. I'm a bloke too and nowhere close to that pace!

This Sunday is the Nike 10k Human race. 1 million runners in 25 cities around the world. The London one is at Wembley. It's my first "race" since I was in school (some 10 "plus" years ago!) and my first over such a long distance (I was mainly a sprinter at school). I've done 10k and more in training though, so I'm not too worried about finishing.

RE: Paula, I avoid statements like "of all time", but she is the finest female road runner of her generation IMO. And no quitter sets a world record in running, let alone over two distances.

Thanks! I've done my training so I'm fairly confident and relaxed about it. I'll push myself a bit, but as it's my first, my main aim is to just finish.

Also, I didn't mean to imply that I know Paula Radcliffe, I don't! I'm just starting with her until I see a Paula-shaped dot in the distance 1'30" into the race.

You assume correctly beinerts - of the male variety of the species.

I used to know just about every upcoming event, now I haven't a clue so apologies if that sounded like a daft question. An event with 1 million runners I hadn't heard of!!

If it's around Wembley you should at least have a flattish course and be able to do a rhythm run. If this is your first road race you'll be buzzing at the end.

It sounds like you have 'got your head around' the distance so that isn't going to cause you a problem and from your training you have an idea of your pace. Your estimate of just under 5mins/k based on 4-40/k for a 5.5km run is a good assessment. However, you may get in to the race and find you've done the first 2km at 4-30 pace and jump to the conclusion you're going too fast. Don't be concerned, if you're feeling comfortable just go with the rhythm.

There's a gain from 'drafting' that you just don't experience in training plus you're not looking out for traffic and stop/starting so I wouldn't be surprised if your overall 10k pace is actually under the 4-40 you did in training for 5.5k.

You'll be hooked after that's for sure.

    Thanks for the tips Rich.

My training runs of 10k or more have all been around 5 minutes a km. I'm sure with adrenaline, others "pulling" me along etc. I can beat it.

I'll let you all know how I got on on Monday.

Make sure you do - I've written down what I expect your time to be. I want to see how close I am!

Remember 'even effort' not 'even pace' is the key to optimal performance.

    The Obese Veteran Diary

Well I said I'd do a 'little one' today meaning a little run.

However, I decided to get a more substantial walk done instead just to get the legs turning over for more than just a few minutes. So walked a 6 mile loop in 1-50, which is fair enough.

It may only be walking but 1hr 50mins of 'on your feet' exercise is always good in my book; its a damn sight more beneficial than 1hr 50mins on the sofa anyway. However, just in the interest of research I'm going to do the latter right now so that I can compare and contrast!

And 6 miles of walking has the same calorie burn as a 6 mile of running (a topic which creates much disbelief and argument) so in that sense it was a good workout.

    beinerts,

There's no point in me telling you on Monday what time I predicted for your 10k, so I'll declare now I'm predicting 46-48. It might sound ambitious but we'll see on Monday. Have a good one.

Some exercise is better than none!

It probably still put you in front of 80% of the population.

And you are injured after all.
