I've been running for weight loss about 10 weeks now and the first couple of times out my knees were really sore - almost felt like when I lifted my upper leg I wasn't sure if the lower leg was gonna follow...
Anyway, I've been doing a couple of things to try and help it: 1) Got some of the sorbothane things as above. I wouldn't say that they're the miracle cure it reads like above, but they certainly help. 2) Building the muscles around the knee - been doing plenty of low impact stuff, cycling and swimming to support the knee as well as running.
These two things combined seem to be doing the trick...I still suffer a little bit with shin splints, but my knee's been behaving much better...managed 13.5 miles on tuesday without any real problems...my knee was a little sore yesterday (along with the rest of my body), but I think that's normal (especially when you've done as little running as I have...).
Idio, welcome along. I only found this place a few days ago - they're a mad bunch but don't let that put you off.
Did I write something that sounded like a miracle cure? These things aren't a cure at all. They just reduce the effects of all the long term pounding and stop injuries occurring in the first place. Well, at least I'm giving them credit for my 25 injury-free years, although I might just be a genetic freak.

Erm, this was a perfectly sensible thread until, oh 6 days ago......!
Genetic freak?! Don't be so hard on yourself! Is obese veteran not enough of a title for ya? You want more??I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

I ran the 1500 meters at sports day at school (because the fast people were too busy mocking me to put in a good time) - but that's the only time in my life I've ever ran more than a mile before (25 now)...
Started out doing 2 miles with a mate in june, which nearly killed me, then have been stepping it up steadily from there. One day I'll be a proper runner though, when I grow up
Welcome. Make no mistake, 13.5 miles is proper running. They call me a proper runner on here (only took it up this year) and I've never done that distance (half marathon), I'd been training for the 10k (which I did last Sunday). Well I stand by that one. But I can see how if people were looking for a 'cure' they would be disappointed - once the damage is done its too late.
Btw There's other products besides Sorbothane - they're just the ones I've always used.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I started training for RFL in June, run a minute walk a minute... we got up to 3 miles no stops for the 5k race.. let it slip and now am 2 miles each time with a degree of effort....
You must be a proper runner to get to 13.5 miles in the time it's taken me to get to 2-3!!

Sensible until 6 days ago? - I'll have to take your word for that! Oh hold on, I can check....I maybe sometime......
I take your point. I'll settle for Obese Veteran for now - too much self-flagellation is not good. Btw I'll only be an Overweight Veteran soon.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

BTW, if you have only been running for 10 weeks and are doing 13.5 miles, some of the problems you mention might be to do with you pushing your body quite hard after a (presumably) long absence. Shin splints are especially misunderstood, they are not caused by impact, but by the muscles around your shin getting stronger. Like all muscles, this happens by small tears forming in the muscle and once these heal, the muscle gets stronger. If you get shin splints, stop running for a while and swim instead. You need rest days where you do nothing as well, to allow your body to heal and get stronger.
Out of interest, what kind of times are you doing and are you male or female? You don't need to answer those questions if you don't want to of course!Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -

Yeah, without stopping...around a 10:20 average pace, so by no means fast - but as I said, I'm doing it for weight loss, so the fact it took me 2 hours 20 is a good thing, not a bad thing at the mo
(in answer to beinerts) - I'm a (bulky) bloke - I run around 10 minute miles normally on longer runs (beyond, say, 7 miles) - around 9 - 9:30 minute miles on 3-7 miles, say and around 8minutes for 3 miles or less...Getting faster, slowly...I agree about the shin splints..I think I've increased the distance a fair bit faster than is recommended, so can't expect my body to react well to it...I'm not really worried about them, they don't bother me when running, just all the rest of the time
(in answer to maz) - I'm gonna do my first race in a couple of weeks, the swansea 10k (target time 50mins - best is around 55 so far) - also thinking about doing some half marathon in cardiff later in the year, not really looked at that though, so not sure if I can still enter etc...and everyone I was gonna run it with has injured themselves, so not sure I'll bother...0 -
