Yes thank you, my friend from Bedford came up for a few days (haven't seen her since June) so was brilliant to spend time with her.

Occasional DFW poster here. This is my first time on this thread, I've been running on and off for about 3 years (mostly on my own) and have been thinking about joining a club so have been spurred on by all of you who are joining clubs too.

Barcode - I used to use a heart rate monitor (Polar F11??) which was quite good but my heart must be a bit crazy because my heart rate is ridiculously high most of the time when I run (even at peak fitness) so I didn't get much out of it. I've recently bought a garmin forerunner 205 which I love so far. Mainly because I can see how far I've gone and what my pace is all the time. It also records every run I do so I don't have to keep track in my diary.

I like gadgets but can see why some people find them an unnecessary distraction.

I went... ran for 0.57 of a mile non stop (according to mapmyrun)!!! Was really weird as I just hit this point where I felt fine even though I was running!! Felt like I could've carried on but only had time to do one 'lap' of our normal route... feel great though! :D

Well done. Shame you didnt have the time. Next time do the same lap. Stop and walk for a minute or two and then complete the second lap. If you need to walk at the end fine, but it seems like a good challange

Yeah, thanks, I might consider something cheap, say, around £50 for recording heart rate etc. I don't want to spend more for something that might just baffle me.

Went out today. Mostly enjoyable. I don't like running near the road though. Mostly because I don't like people staring. How do you deal with that? And it's always from the people who look like they would collapse if they had to run to the end of the street, let alone a few miles. I'm not a shrinking violet, and I'm normally tempted to comment back, but it is distracting. A route that avoids the idiots might be good.

When I was sat at the traffic lights & someone ran past I always used to think 'mad!'

Now I'm turning into one of them!

I had convinced myself the forerunner was an unnecessary toy but then it was on offer in pcworld about a month ago for £50 and I couldn't resist. I'm not sure it's worth the £100 or more that it normally sells for. Try wiggle.co.uk for heart rate monitors. They have quite a few and are often well priced. I think (hope I didn't imagine) sometimes aldi or lidl do a good cheap one but you may have to wait a while for them to come in.

Oddly, where I live it seems like everyone goes running so I don't often come across that. It makes me feel lazy when I don't go though and there are people running all the time. I think in that situation I'd just feel smug that I had got off my backside and done some exercise.

I once had someone in a wheelchair with a missing leg say to his mate, "Look at the state of her running". I was so shocked I just kept plodding by rather than saying something back (it would only have got nasty).

That's what puts me off really - the chavvy ned types who think it's big to say stuff as you pass them and they're doing nothing but hang about in bus shelters. Luckily in Edinburgh we have Arthur's Seat which is a hellish hill, but has so many cyclists and runners that anyone not doing exercise tends to be in the minority.

Don't let them put you off. You're running, they're not. Even the teenage boys who think they're big and hard for saying stuff as you run past will just turn into fat old men who can only count going to the fridge as exercise.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

Could it possibly be that some of those who stand and stare could even be envious of you having the ability and 'get up and go' to be doing it, especially if they're not able. We once saw a chap in Scotland who was (I'd imagine) a born runner, so graceful yet powerful as he just glided by, but was so fast. All we could do was stand and stare, but in a great way! Any way could you run off into country lanes? If I ever do get to jog I'd sooner go there than along roads where you get fumes etc; quieter too. Saying that, I know it's not always that easy, sorry wasn't thinking. Good luck though and don't let them bother you.
