Thank you all and particularly you Squizz for the delightful dodgy hug
Just so frustrated as want to get back into it all, think I will give my physio a ring and see what she suggests.
SW - completely agree the Marathon entry system this year. From what I understand however they don't offer the places to people, see if they accept them and then offer out the rejected ones when people haven't got back to them, so I presume they either have more places for charity or they won't fill their quota for the marathon
I think they should have left it a week and I think it was pretty insulting to those who entered this year to open it when the majority were still running. Saying that though, if it encourages people to get fit and enter then that's a good thing.
Off to ring physio.......see if she has any replacement knees going

JB - I have a bad knee from a broken leg when I was 16, so I can empathise. And yes rest is the only solution. Catch up with the swimming and cross training. You can afford to rest
I agree with all the comments on the entry system. On line is better than the clumsy system that operated before, but the timing was madness. As I was running this year, I almost forgot to get my entry in. It is true that non serious runners would have applied. Also there are many marathon runners who do well in their race but initially say never again. This often doesn't last very long but would have caught some of these people out, which is a real shame. What is the hurry? I do hope that they would have learned from next year and hopefully there is a mechanism to offer feedback“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle0 -
Cheers Chris, it's just so boring resting. Now got a sandwich bag of ice cling filmed to my leg  attractive look. Seeing physio tomorrow, means I have to fork out money but think she is well worth it. She says the Marathon takes a lot out of you and she will sort me out!

Well Ive had a lovely run, enjoyed it so much. No stitch and a lovely run along weymouth seafront in the sun. Actually did more than in the training plan but felt fine. So ran for 15 mins and did 1.4 miles.
Looking forward to Friday now! I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

There is a slightly different action on a treadmill to the road. You are concentrating on keeping your balance on a treadmill and maybe this causes you to step down harder - I dont know. Ask someone you run with next week to observe this and perhaps help you to adjust your action.
I think trying to stop the dog tripping me up wasn't helping  I find it easier on the treadmill as I don't have to concentrate, I just plug my music in & run! I am definately running differently outside as my muscles wouldn't be aching if I used them on the TM. I'm going to keep doing the best I can this week until my first session in the club.

Was tempted to suggest you tried the Body Shop, but stopped myself in time.:p Hope the rest will sort your knee out.
I'm going to have a rest day today, to give my aching muscles a chance to ease.Debt Free as of 17/01/2009 Turtle Power!!

No need to be too rigid with training plans. If you feel you can do more do it. Just be careful you are not overdoing it, but it sounds you are doing fine“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle0 -

Hi all.
My first post in this thread, and hope it's o.k to join in.
I took up running (well, more like a disorganized shuffle) two years ago, inspired to enter the RFL, as there is a hereditary cancer in my family, and as my brother was (is) ill, decided I would do something for him. Anyway, it didn't stop at the RFL.
Biggest problem was that I became disorganized, didn't follow a program, and from around Sept until late March, hardly ran at all. I had a nasty shock when I attempted it again, I can tell you. I am now following a beginners 5k, and nearing the last week, so thinking I might attempt a beginners 10k after this, as well as trying to do some races over the summer.
What's surprised me is that although the initial getting back into it felt like I was going to have a heart attack, what I have lost has come back fairly quickly. I'm now up to forty minutes plodding along at eleven minute mile pace, which is not going to win me any awards, but it's eleven minute miles faster than somebody sitting at home eating a pizza. I'm hoping to increase the distance gradually before I think about speeding up.
What's surprised me is how much better I feel mentally too. Going outside no longer fills me with dread and a feeling of gritting my teeth just to get through it. Instead, I find it's a time of day to destress, and I almost always come back feeling quite good. I haven't lost any weight, but I have altered my body composition, and that's more important to me as I don't have anything to lose. Just want to get in better shape.
Problem I'm now having is a flippin' blister. I have ASICS 2110 shoes, and it starts feeling like I have a stone in my show around the 30 minute mark. I don't know if it's the shoes or me. They are not old.
Also, does anybody use a heart rate monitor? I've seen the polar and garmin things, but it all looks very complicated.
Might think of more to say in a bit.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. '

Welcome aboard Barcode. Yes once you have done some running it does come back quite quickly after even a long lay off. Running is 90% in the head and already you know what you are capable of. Take it all slowly and you will see results. The thing with running shoes is that ideally they should be changed after about 500 miles. I always recommmend that you should have your running style assessed so that you can be prescribed the right shoe for you. This is free and should only take a couple of minutes at a good running store.
I dont use heart monitors or any sophisticated equipment but I am sure one of the others will be able to help you with that.
Once again welcome and good luck with your running.
