Well I went and ran for 15 mins....dead on my feet now and probably shouldn't have gone but felt ok when I was running.

Now tell me do you always feel rubbish when you start running, i.e the first 4-5 mins I really feel rubbish and that I could quite easily give up. Then I get into a good routine, breathing, speed etc and feel great. Does this continue even when you get up to running 10k? or is is just because I am unfit still??
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

That sound quite normal. I often feel dont feel up to it, but then run myself in and feel good. It is nothing to do with how fit you are or how far it is. Often it is mental attitude, other times you just need to blow the cobwebs away. No need to over analise it - if you end up feeling good you have had a good run and you should be pleased

Thanks SW, I think I will see how I feel at 1pm when I would go. If I feel ok then I might just go. If I reel rotten then I will tuck myself up in bed and wait until I feel better. Where abouts are you SW, taking that you are probably in the south west?

How many rest days do some of you take? I run Tues, Thurs and Sun as per the programme. I sometimes do other cross-training, mostly go to the gym and use the elliptical, rower, or weights. I like to have one day of not doing much though.

What's been the experience with running clubs? I have visions of everybody speeding off and leaving me standing there. When a website says beginners welcome, I don't find that helpful, as to them, a beginner might be somebody capable of running for an hour. Maybe a quick e-mail will resolve that.
Send them an email but I am sure you are going to be fine. Most clubs should cater for the absolute beginner.

I have learned a lot the last few weeks from people's fear of joining running clubs, because they feel that they ought to reach a paricular standard. Certainly I shall bring up this subject at my clubs next meeting and see what we can do in our marketing to ensure that all fears are laid to rest. Perhaps those of who are members of clubs need to do more to make them more beginners friendly. It is not that they aren't it is that the prospective member is not aware of it. I know that a couple of years ago we advertised for new people, saying that we would support them from absolute beginner to London Marathon if that is what they wanted. There are one or two people who moved through from that first level to LM. I feel quite empassioned now to ensure that these type of initiative are carried out and that everyone knows that they are welcomed.

While we are on the subject, i thought i would tell you about my experience of running club in my local area.

It's not a great tale, but i think it's good to hear both sides.

A friend and i went to the leisure centre from where the run starts, we sorta hovered around the periphery whilst warming up... then the route was planned, i'm guessing probably 5-7 miles of route was mapped out and everyone set off, except me n my friend, we kinda thought that it would be varying abilities.... the leader (?) turned to us and said something like "oh, why don't you two head across to the cricket pitches and try to do 2 laps, we'll all meet you there as that's where we all finish. see you in 45 minutes.

I was speechless and angry but we went and did our run. Bearing in mind that i was training for a 10k so wasn't totally green, i felt awful.

So apart from a warm up and cool down the group offerred us nothing. They didn't even assign a regular to accompany us or anything.

I believe there is another group locally run by jog scotland who are a lot more newbie friendly and i think i would join them if i was looking for something group wise here.
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

That sounds dire. I hope that is the exeption that proves the rule.

Been out this morning between showers. Did about 4 miles I guess

Oh man I feel so big - yes I know I am but I really can't wait to go out running, I'm too embarrassed to go swimming and can't walk far at the mo due to some pain. Oh moan, moan, moan - I am excited about the baby of course but just so shallow about putting on weight!

Sorry to be doom and gloom - glad everyone's getting out and about. I'm gonna look at some races to aim for next year that will keep me going and focused.
