Hi ISOM - good to hear you are back on the road to recovery and no more burst stitches. Have you tried changing the date settings when your watch is connected to the computer in the software, that sometimes works? Once you get it going you will love it and wonder what you have done without it :D

I did read about P and posted a very long post on her thread but then lost it  so I will try again!

I managed 19 miles this morning in just over 3 hours :j Was very very hard and very tiring but sod that, I did it. One more long run and then start to reduce the mileage, I can't wait!!!

Off to eat chocolate cupcakes now :D

whooooooo go BA!! Well done you! I bet it was hard but so proud of you for doing it!! Did your OH egg you on? Must be a distinct advantage as I have to row with myself just to get off the sofa!! This also means I manage to convince myself I dont need to go (wih some incredible excuses!!). Going to go to WRN tomorrow! How do you do the settings from the creen? Still trying to get the hang of it and in case you havent noticed am a bit of a technophobe!!
Welcome suzie 40! I am just at the start & currently on a walk run so a literal beginner but love it when get going as feel such a sence of freedom when running that I only get when I swim...it was great going ot this am and went from my house for the first time (paranoid about the neighbors laughing!!) so was chuffed with that! See if there is a womens running network near you - they're great for beginners!! Really got me motivated and encouraged more than anything!

Hi guys, i've decided to do the race for life this year and am hoping to run it, despite not having run since i was at school! Reading some of your posts i can't believe how you lot do it, 19 miles is unbelievable!

I'd like to start training for my race but am not really sure where to start, anyone have any tips. I'm in reasonable health and walk loads. I did try getting into it a few months back but i wasn't breathing properly as i ran and so my throat hurt after, not sure if there is a proper way to breathe!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Well done andan for making that decision.

Running and walking is a great start. Within a few weeks you will find that your walking will decrease and running increase. There is no hurry.

Your question about breathing reminded me of what my boxing coach used to say about breathing when training. In through the nose and out through the mouth. It became a mantra. I dont remember all the reasons for this, but one is that impurities in the air get trapped by nasal hair. Yes I know we deny that we have them but we all do and that is their purpose.

Also try not to gasp but by breathing in a deep rythmical controlled way you utilise oxygen most efficiently.

  • Hi fellow running buddies

During my injury I have become a big fan of cross - dressing , sorry cross training - lol and I think it has helped a lot. I am now back on the treadmill and first run was only 20 mins but did 40 mins last night, just under 5 miles so hopefully I am back on track, will slowly pick the milege back up but think Ill probably get up to a bout 16 miles again, which will mean Ive done 3 x 18 and 1 x 20 as my longestr runs, with the 20 being on the 24th Feb so I hope I havent lost too much

  • Hi SW, really glad you're back running again, it's such a lead up to the marathon and I am constantly worried about being ill/hurt etc!

I agree re the cross training, I switched my training plan halfway and started using FIRST marathon training which is 3 runs a week and 2 cross training and it has made a huge difference. I don't think I will do sub 4 hours but even finishing will be amazing to be honest.

I'm sure you haven't lost too much and will do just fine on the day!

Welcome to suzie and andan :) Wow well done BA on the 19 miles! :T And SW I'm glad to hear that you're recovering.

I've not been doing a great deal, my lower back has still been niggling when I tried to walk more than about 3 miles.. pain in the *rse - literally! :o Feel much better this week so am going to try to get back into the training plan although I'm a couple of weeks behind. As well as the Moonwalk being three months off now, I've got the added motivation of having weighed myself last night and being the heaviest I've ever been. Don't really know why as I think I eat OK, I've not been exercising for a couple of weeks but I'm sure I haven't put it all on in a fortnight! I'm still in the healthy weight range for my height but on the heavier side of it, clothes are feeling a little tight and to be honest it's depressed me a bit :( Oh well, just have to do something about it I suppose!!

Evening all. Didnt go to wrn tonight as its blowing a gale here (see news!) and I'm aching after yesterdays efforts! Grace I have an ennell sports bra and get mine from less bounce (via quidco of course 3.28 cashback!) and while they are expensive I have rather large appendages & those puppies aint going nowhere! Getting strapped in is highly amusing but being honest my previous bra was useless and boobs really hurt - good bra & trainers a must, even for us DFW's! Cheapie running gear at JJB sports too! Naff but cheap! I am quite overweight and am starting again after an op and do a minute walk, minte run. Slowly but surely seems to be the best advice and listen to your body! Race for life have a training prog but they start at 4 mins walk run which for me is a bit much to start with! Runners world have some great info & tips and I'm sure others can recc? Streatching also important as I discovered to my cost! Good luck & keep us posted! Remember baby steps!
