Compensation for delayed flights Discussion Area

Does anyone know if there's a time limit on claiming for compensation? I was on a flight to Las Vegas at Xmas but it was cancelled for 24 hours. It was definitely a cancellation as it was a different flight number the next day.
Apparently the reason for the cancellation was that the aircraft had suffered damage from the luggage unloader in the Carribean.
Virgin told me I had to claim through my travel insurance, of course they never mentioned about compensation from them and I was unaware of this. Any ideas?
Thanks.0 -

This would almost certainly fall under extraordinary events regarding flight safety, beyond the airline's control. Therefore exempting Virgin from paying out under the EU regulations.0 -
Last Wednesday, we were travelling back from Paphos, Cyprus, to Manchester, and our flight was delayed by seven hours and forty-one minutes.
It was scheduled to depart at 17.00 hours, but didn't leave until almost 01.00 hours.
We were (eventually, after three & a half hours) given vouchers worth upto €10 each to spend in the airport cafes.
This was after spending 2 hours in the departure lounge, and then a further 90 minutes on the plane, before they spotted that it was leaking fuel from one wing.
We were then taken back to the departure lounge to wait another few hours before a replacement aircraft was found for us.
As we boarded our delayed plane, we were handed paperwork which stated:
SWISSPORT
Date 23 Sep 09
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT FLIGHT CY506 ON THE 23 SEP 09 IS DELAYED TO DEPART APPROXIMATELY 7 HRS DUE TO TECHNICAL PROBLEM
This was then signed by someone who's name we cannot read, and entitled: PASSENGER HANDLING OFFICER
PAPHOS AIRPORT
We haven't a clue how to proceed in our compensation claim. We sent an email to the big chief of Swissport, but he hasn't yet answered.
Can anyone tell us how to claim compensation for this 7 hours 41 minutes delayed flight?
Thank You

You don't have a compensation claim - your flight was delayed, not cancelled or overbooked. You were looked after during the delay (the voucher) which is the requirement.
I doubt if you'll get a response from Swissport - it's zilch to do with them anyway. They are a ground handling company. It's the airline who would deal with any claim.
The piece of paper was supplied to help you claim off your insurance company. Check your policy to see what delay triggers a claim - it could well be more than you were delayed. (Mine is 12 hours, but it's a cheapie)0 -
"Any postponements of longer than 5 hours will also make passengers eligible for reimbursement of the ticket (if they decide not to travel), and if it continues into the night, hotel rooms, and transfer to it, must also be provided for poor weary customers."

Flew with Monarch a week ago - 9am flight delayed by 7 hours til 4pm at Gatwick. Wasn't given any refreshments or meal vouchers or the phone calls/emails you are entitled to. Delay was due to a techincal fault, the flight was grounded and we were waiting on another plane to take us to Portugal.
Hence to say - because the delay was over 5 hours (and if we didnt travel we were entitled to a refund) we trotted along to the Easyjet desk and booked another flight - paid for it. Have just written to Monarch telling me they owe me a refund on the delayed flight I never took as well as compensation for the food vouchers they never gave me. I expect to get at least my ticket money back. I am chancing my luck in asking for compensation for the Easyjet flight I paid for too. Doubt I'll get it but since I'm already writing to them I may as well ask!! Will let you know how I get on.0 -
Hi,
I booked a flight with KLM and they have cancelled the inbound flight from Mexico to Amsterdam to London. They only have flights now on the previous day or the day after. I was set to leave on the friday coming and come back the sunday after. Am I entitled to the compensation outlined in the article (Or is that only for flights when you get to the airport and it is cancelled then)? I was told advised ~15th Oct and the return flight was on the 1st Nov. But the outbound flight is on the 23rd.
Thanks,
Chris0
