It's a road where there's a physical separation (reservation / barriers etc) between traffic travelling in opposite directions. The number of lanes in either direction doesn't matter.
Here's a nice example of a 70mph road for you:0 -

Oh yes he was on a windy country lane.Going along a dual carriage way around 65mph and seen a police van which most likely had a camera in the back so quickly reduced my speed hopefully it was enough.
Is the national speed limit still 60 and if you receive a ticket is it points/fine. Hopefully if I was just over 60mph I won't receive a ticket.
Thanks,

Which is what I said at the start until someone mentioned it needed a divider to make the limit 70.
As you rightly said it's not a dual carriageway without, even with multiple lanes travelling in either direction.0 -
The slightly nuts thing about that one is, if you go back about 100 yards from the photo, it's a single lane road (no centre markings). Then becomes dual for maybe 100 yds (to just over that hill), then back to single lane again.
Still, if your car's quick enough and brakes are good enough, you're free to do 70 on that 100 yd stretch. Yet you're limited to 50mph on the main A road about a mile back from there!0 -

Is that on street view? I want a clearer shot of the sign, because I have a mate who thinks dual carriageways must have two lanes in either direction.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Yep - me too - in fact loads of folks think that - I've gone through the discussion at work, where we 'voted' on it, and I lost.
The 'winners' all were of the opinion that the dual part was referring to the 2 lanes needed in each direction - which of course is NOT the case.
The dual correctly refers to the fact that there are 2 carriageways - one in each direction.
I just smiled and said fine OK.
It gives one a warm glow inside to know you're right. :beer:0 -
There's a road in Birmingham some where near robin hood if I remember correctly. It looks like a dual carriageway two carriageways on either side of a large grass reserve. Looks like a classic dual carriageway. However each carriageway has a lane in either direction.
Now is that a dual carriageway or two roads with the same name?0 -

Yes, a dual carriageway - it says so on the sign. LOL.
So it must be true
