Hi Twink
Just made my first 1/2 batch with wholemeal flour and honey and they gorgeous, will be trying some of the other suggestion.
Couple of questions, should they be soft in the middle or crispy as not sure if I made them too thick, and can you freeze cooked biscuits?
Thanks again
Jenny
glad you both like them, they are nice made with honey, i get about 50 from my batch, recipe actually says 60 but mine are crisper thats how i like them, they probably are thinner and left in the oven a tiny bit longer, the cooked biscuits do freeze but just take out what you need as they mightnt stay so crisp0 -
oh i forgot to say the other day that after my disaster with making to much and then having it too dry adding a little warm water to the mixture worked great, so thank you to the person who recommended it ( sorry forgot who it was)Still TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

good for you, they are a lot better than shop bought and you know whats in them and you get more for your money too, i put dried ginger in mine but they are nice using honey instead of syrup too0 -
batch came out of he oven 1hr ago and I have just sampled my 1st (2nd & 3rd) homemade hobnob! They are delicious! I have no scales so roughly converted the quantiies into cups and threw in some more oats for good measure, wasn expecting them to be so crunchy and tasty for such a simple recipe! Thank you Twink
How many do people get from the recipe? I rolled them into large walnut sized balls before squashing with a fork and got 25 hobnobs, have i been abit generous?
Im going to be doing stall at a local fete saturday and thought these would be ideal, so want to get the quantities right0 -
Made my first batch yesterday - they were fab!! I say "were" as I couldn't keep OH away from them long enough to cool!! I got 50 out of my mix using my plastic measuring spoon (dessertspoon) as a mould and then flattening with a fork. However they didn't "spread" out as much as I was expecting them to - did I do something wrong? Do you think they would work using wholemeal flour, molasses sugar & treacle, or would that be a bit of overkill?"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718

I make half a batch, then use a teaspoon measure per biscuit. I get between 35 to 40 from the mix. when cooked they're about2 inches across. I make them small because we're little piggies and have 2/3 biccies a time, no matter what size!!!!0

this is the recipe i use
8oz sr flour
8oz sugar
8oz porridge oats
8oz margarine
1tbsp golden syrup
1tbsp hot water
1/2 tsp bic soda
mix flour, oats and sugar, melt marg, syrup and water in a pan stir in bic soda and add to dry mix, mix well, make smallish balls and put on greased tray and flatten slightly with a fork, 180oc for 15 mins, cool on the tray, you just want them golden in oven not brown
Hello, can I use baking powder instead of bicarbonate of soda? Is this the same thing?

Debbie
no Debbie it isnt quite the same thing though i have left out the bic soda by mistake and not seen much difference
the recipe states 60 biscuits but i usually get about 50, flatten quite well with the fork as they wont spread very much
Frugalista i am doing mine just now with treacle, might be too much with the molasses sugar as i used white and you get a nice treacle flavour
GreenManGO good luck at the fete with them
thanks for the info sandy0
