Hi I want to have a go at making these but can't eat wheat. (Ok with oats though). Any idea if substituting with Dove's Farm plain flour and baking powder will work? Has anyone tried that? Its the only way I get to have biscuits!

nothing ventured nothing gained Dee, give it a try and a bonus if it does work as you can use the mix to do flapjacks or look back the thread for any amount of variations, adding dried fruit, seeds, a little coconut, preserved ginger, dried ginger or cinnamon or almond essence or use honey instead of syrup

i would sift the flour and baking powder to make sure its mixed through

nothing seems to happen, i have sometimes forgotten it too but must be there for some reason

I made some this morning with chopped ginger but forgot to add the bicarb. They still tasted good, only a few left! Will add the bicarb next time. It is the first time I have forgotten to add it. I wonder what the bicarb does?
  • Twink i need you help please

i made a double batch yesterday ( silly thing i am it only just fitted in my large bowl) but they came out too dry the mixture would not stick together. So i did an extra 2oz of butter, was still a bit dry but tryied it anyway. put the 1st lot in the oven but made it a bit more blobby and thicker and did not flattern them down, but still they are ok but i am not that happy with them. 2nd lot i decided to make as a traybake pushed it all together in the tray by hand again ok but not that happy with them kids liked them made in to a tray bake though. I still have loads of the mixture left in a sealed tub in the fridge , i dont want to through it away but also don't want to just add lots more butter and ruin it so any suggestions for me please ?

Can't believe this thread has been around for a year, and I only made my first batch today. They are just gorgeous, I did some with melted Galaxy on as well.

I am having a dinner party tomorrow night and have wrapped some in cellophane and ribbon to give my guests as a thank you for coming. Even my DH thinks they are great and he loves Hobnobs.

Thanks twink for the fab recipe

The chopped ginger is my favorite version. Thanks for confirming they taste OK without the bicarb.

I'm not Twink, but I have had problems with mixture not sticking together and I just added a small amount of water (just a dribble).

    Galaxy chocolate yum yum

as for the mix being dry do make sure you just melt the butter and no more and gently, it doesnt work so well if its hot, another thing you could do is to take your tablespoon of warm water and mix the bicarb into it in a cup then pour into the melted butter, it should foam up a bit more also be quick to mix the butter into the oats, dont give it a chance to soak in

hope that helps but i am sure all makes of flour are different

to be honest i may not have turned of the heat as quick as i should of and what with making a double batch in one bowl probably went against me could not mix it quick enough. next time will make 1 lot at a time ( was actually making a double batch od hobnobs and a batch of anzacs and was contemplating making cookies- but changed my mind and starting dinner think i was trying to do too much at once lol) will see if i can rescue it tonight then :)
