  • hey I just made some of these for the first time! :jBeen meaning to get around to it for ages. Must admit that I adapted the recipe a bit though to fit what I had in the house. I used half the amount of sugar, substituted honey for the golden syrup, used veg oil instead of marg and made them with wholemeal self raising flour instead of white. I also made them as a traybake instead of individual biscuits too. They are absolutely delicious!!! :D Thank you ever so much for the recipe :A
Money paid out from Topcashback so far= £105.89 :j

I costed these out today from Asda's prices on my supermarket. Mostly value or own brand prices.

    225g sr flour – 6.3p
    225g sugar – 16.9p
    225g porridge oats – 12.8p
    225g margarine – 40p
    1tbsp golden syrup (25g) – 3p
    1tbsp hot water - negligible
1/2 tsp bic soda – negligible

    = 79p or 2p each for a batch of 36.

Not included fuel, and time, obviously.

Been meaning to try making these for over 12 months - and finally got around to it on Friday rolleyes2.gif

As my OH had mentioned a couple of weeks ago that he's a fan of B0unty B@rs (as am I), I tried the version with half oats and half coconut - and then coated the tops with plain chocolate (Mr M Value). Took half the batch over with me yesterday afternoon, and they were a huge hit with him :D (He was even happier when I left him the last 3 for his supper tonight) Could have done with more coconut for my tastebuds though, so plan to add extra next time I do this version.

With the chocolate on I thought they'd be good with ginger (rather than coconut), and OH agreed - so it looks like I'll be trying that this week and taking them up next weekend (will have to make them as late in the week as possible to be sure there's some left to take though ;))

I had a gadget for making melon balls and it is perfect for scooping out the mixture and making even sized blobs which you then flatten on the tray.

having teflon baking tray liners helped a lot because they were very easy to lift off. I made about 50 - but there aren't that many left now the gannets have been at them
Many thanks for the tip about the melon baller - dug mine out this morning, and the biscuits from my second batch are much more evenly sized :T Managed to make 52 :)

Went for the ginger version this time - the intention being to 'chocolate' them tonight or first thing tomorrow ready to take to OH's tomorrow night, but (having sampled a couple to make sure they're cooked properly) I'm not sure there'll be any left to take (or even to put chocolate on later) :o

I am now a hero among my friends thanks to Twinks Hobnobs! I have made about 5 batches in the last couple of weeks and have had to hand them out to stop me eating them all!

I have a friend whose birthday it was at the weekend, and had no money to buy her a gift. I whipped up a batch of hobnonbs, stacked them in a pile 10 high, and wrapped them in cellophane and tied with ribbons that I had kept from other pressies. I did 10 plain, 10 with white choc and 10 with dark choc. She was delighted and has already asked for more. They looked really professional wrapped up as well!:T:T

Batch 3 just taken out of the oven - but I think I'll be lucky to have any left by the end of tonight (if they even make it to me leaving for work in a little over 3 hours!)

This time I used 4oz Demerara sugar and 4oz normal granulated, plus added 4oz raisins to the mix. Intentionally made them larger (to keep them softer) as my biggest temptation when I go to Mr A (which isn't often) is their raisin cookies, and made 36 from the mix - though some are still a bit on the small side for me ;)

This is the first time I've had to leave them on the baking trays for 5 mins before slipping a fish slice under them wasn't causing them to crumble, so I'm going to have to buy more trays to remove the need to leave the oven running until I can 'recycle' them rolleyes2.gif

The three I've tested so far are wonderful, and the Demerara has given them a lovely sweet crunch :T

Wanders off to finish making a brew, which (naturally) will also necessitate the tasting of another one or two cookies.....

  • Can you tray back these rather than do individual cookies? Many thanks

I'm currently working my way through the thread from the start (about two thirds of the way there now), and I've seen a number of mentions of tray baking at 170 degrees for 20 mins.
