i tried putting in choc chips but they melted with the heat of the butter

I use some choc chips with nearly every batch that I make these are DH favourites. I make the basic mix or even double it and then divide it up into how many different types I am making e.g. ginger, plain, cranberry, choc chip etc and if I do the choc chips ones last, by the time I add the choc they don't melt. I no longer actually buy the ready to use choc chips, I buy a large bar of Aldi dark chocolate and chop it up, works out so much cheaper too.

My DH and Ds are ill with shingles so in a feigned attempt to make the healthier I used malt extract instead of the golden syrup and s-r wholemeal flour.
Worked well and the biscuits are being devoured as I type :p

When I flatten them a little on the trays I make a little dent in the middle and put a little bit of jam in them and they are yummy!

This sounds really yummy and as I have some malt extract, will give this a try over the weekend.
Hope your family are soon feeling better.
