I pay you hommage Twink.
I've just gained street cred from a gang of 24 year olds, and the tin of hobnobs is a lot smaller. It matters not if you try and fail, and fail and try again; But it matters much if you try and fail, and fail to try again.

Hi all,
Long time lurker herejust wanted to say a big thanks to Twink for her homemade hobnob recipe. As someone who has only just started to get my head round domesticated stuff like baking goodies, I was really surprised at how easy (and cheap!) they were to make.
I think I might be addicted to 'beginners baking' now. Tonight, as I had some almonds left over from making my first Christmas cake, I made some almond cookies because you don't need many ingredients. Very nice if I may say so myself! Here is the recipe:
125g butter, chopped
55g caster sugar
150g S. R. flour
30g ground almonds
2 tablespoons flaked almonds (optional)
1) Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-assisted, lightly grease 2 baking trays
2) Beat butter and sugar in a small bowl until smooth (I warmed the butter to make it easier on the arms). Stir in flour and ground almonds.
3) Roll mixture into balls about an inch across; place onto baking trays about 5cm apart. Flatten slightly with a fork to approx 1cm thick & sprinkle with flaked almonds (optional).
4) Bake for about 10 mins or until slightly browned. Stand cookies on trays for 5 mins, then transfer to wire racks to cool.
I made 15 from this mix, and they were a bit too moreish
Thanks for reading my newbie post, I am so glad I found this forum - I have found so many money-saving tips for cooking etc, and I'm very grateful to all that have taken th time to pass on their knowledge (especially on the OS boards)

oh shame, did they turn out ok? means we could reduce the sugar a little
thanks for your recipe diamondgirl and glad you liked the hobnobs0 -
I also reduce the amount of sugar in the hobnobs, you can also replace with any sugar substitute you can use in cooking0
-
this is the recipe i use
8oz sr flour
8oz sugar
8oz porridge oats
8oz margarine
1tbsp golden syrup
1tbsp hot water
1/2 tsp bic soda
mix flour, oats and sugar, melt marg, syrup and water in a pan stir in bic soda and add to dry mix, mix well, make smallish balls and put on greased tray and flatten slightly with a fork, 180oc for 15 mins, cool on the tray, you just want them golden in oven not brown
Made these this afternoon to fill oven while cooking breat of lamb for tea. Huge hit. DD keeps asking if she can have another 1. Have had to hide them now or they will all be gone by tomorrow.0
