How long the flsuhes last is a how long is a piece of string question. Every woman is different and over three years isn't unusual

I've just seen this thread and wondered if anyone could help. Does this sound like the menopause?

I'm 40 and I've been having problems for a year or so.

A summary of my cycle: If you count the first day of heavy bleeding as day 1, I'll bleed heavy for 2-3 days and it has clots and lumps in. Days 4-7 the bleeding lightens and tails off but I still pass the odd clot/lump. Days 7-12 are great and I feel fine! Around day 12 I start getting sore breasts and PMT cramps, then I'll start spotting very dark brown blood. This gets worse as the days pass and lasts until day 23-27 when my proper period starts.

So in a nutshell, I'm having some kind of symptom most days and I only feel normal for up to 5 days per cycle!

I've been to my GP but just keep getting fobbed off and told it will settle down. I'm just sick of feeling run down most of the time because of it and sick of having to use pant liners/towels and painkillers most of the month as they're not cheap!

Becles, when did you have your last smear test? I ask because bleeding between periods can be a sign of cervical cancer. It's the reason mine went undetected for so long as I just put it down to my age and the menopause starting.

I think you need to see your GP again.

I can't remember but I think it was about 18 months ago. I do go and get it done when I get the reminder letter.

I will go back and pester them again though.

Anyone get palpitations and feel nervous and anxious? That's me.

Well into MP now no flushes or sweats, but the above yes. The palpitations are terribly frightening. Did the holter monitor all ok, but still.

Doc said it was because I was grieving for my sister. OH says it happened overnight. I dunno, don't want HRT, by maybe I need anti anxiety counselling or anti depressants.

First time I have said this out loud.
  • Have just found this thread after searching for something to help me.

Im 49 and think I could be perimenopausal.

Periods still regular and the occasional hot flush during the night.

Periods have changed though..........from being fairly light all my life, I now have months where I am flooding for 2/3 days and my energy levels have nose dived. Have quite a physical job where Im on my feet all day so really struggling with this more than anything.

Have started taking iron hoping this might help but does anyone else have any advise on boosting energy levels ?

Not a good idea to take iron without having your levels checked as too much can be dangerous.

I agree with Torry, my mum has to have blood taken every few months to keep her iron levels down. Too much iron can cause serious problems.

It does sound like the start of the menopause. I suggest you go and see your GP.
