Have just found this thread after searching for something to help me.

Im 49 and think I could be perimenopausal.

Periods still regular and the occasional hot flush during the night.

Periods have changed though..........from being fairly light all my life, I now have months where I am flooding for 2/3 days and my energy levels have nose dived.

I'm 49 too but don't have any symptoms yet. My periods are still light so not looking forward to them getting heavier. Do you get any pain and if so, it is better or worse than before?

Period pain for first day is enough to keep me awake and needing some sort of pain relief. Dont really like taking pills but I like my sleep.

Not every month is the same. Some months I sail through with no problems but others like the one I've just had really take their toll and leave me wanting to escape from the world for a few days but real life doesnt allow for that Im afraid.

    Hi all,

I posted in this thread in September 14 saying I was reducing my HRT as doc had said as I'd been taking it for 15 years, I needed to stop.

So I reduced down & took my last Premique tablet (this is a half dose tablet) just before Xmas.

However over the last couple of months, I've noticed the hot flushes I'm getting on a daily basis. The night ones aren't so bad I've had to strip off or change the bedding, just have to throw the light duvet off to cool down but I get the sweats generally once or twice a night and maybe 3 or 4 times a day.

It's almost impossible to get an appointment with my GP and I'm reluctant to start taking HRT again. I started my Meno at 34/35 and I'm almost 52.

Can anyone suggest an alternative that might help?

    Hi All

Really pleased I found this thread. I am 41 and think I am peri menopausal. I'm not sure if I should go to the doctors or if there is even anything they can do to help with the symptoms, so any advice you can give would be appreciated.

I have always had very regular, set my watch by them, periods and since my coil was removed at 34 these have remained and still are quite light and last a max of 5 days. I have always had period migraines but have never really suffered the usual PMT type symptoms.

However for the last 18 months or so my periods have been less predictable and I now chart their comings and goings. It seems I am losing a day a month off my cycle and then at around a 23 or 24 day cycle length it kick starts back into a 29 day cycle for a month, for me to start the process of shortening cycle lengths again.

Worst of all are the symptoms which vary massively and are really unpredictable from month to month. This last period was awful. I battled a migraine for around 4 days then had severe PMT symptoms (anxiety, short tempered, tearful) for a further 3-4 days - I am a horrible person, you could lock me in a room with myself for five minutes and I would come out absolutely livid with myself:o.

Aunt Flo arrived, PMT symptoms eased and I spent the next two days feeling like I had been hit by a truck, flu type symptoms, extreme exhaustion, brain fog. My sleep is disturbed during this time and I am having night sweats and I struggle to manage my temperature during the day.

I can spend a fortnight a month feeling rubbish but there is no set pattern to the symptoms so I have no idea what to expect in the run up to or during a period. All I have learnt so far is to dread it!

I have two kids and a high pressured, though mostly enjoyable, job. This is really impacting my life now. Imagine having to give a presentation to 70 people on a day when you can barely remember your name! That was me last Wednesday!:(

Early menopause does run in the family so I am half expecting it. My mum had finished her periods completely at the age of 44 and my grandma was a few years earlier than that!

So, does it sound like the start of peri menopause from your experiences? And is it worth a visit to the doctors - will they do anything to help? I am really looking for some help to manage the symptoms so I can function a bit better during the worst months.

Any thoughts, advice, ideas would be really appreciated.

Poor you...........what us women have to go through eh?

I have always been really against HRT and said when my time came, I would try all the herbal alternatives first but if my symptoms were as bad as yours........and yes I think you are probably in peri.........I would be taking anything that helped.

    Race you to the doctors!

I can sympathise with the brain fog.

On two days of my period its like Im in my own little bubble and everything else is going by slowly and in a haze. Frightens me to know that things can only get worse before they get better.

    Good luck.

i also said i would avoid HRT but when i was nearly passing out during the day from flushes, waking 8 times a night and feeling flipping miserable i decided enough was enough and went to Dr who put me on it

other things i tried before HRT were first black cohosh and then femarelle which both worked well for a couple of years each and delayed me starting on HRT.

unfortunately things keep changing and what works at first doesnt after a while, well thats what i found anyway

    aaah the joys!!!

Thanks Kantankrus Made and Shykins for your replies.

It's just good to know that I'm not alone in this, not that

I'd wish my symptoms on anyone else.

I think I will look at some herbal remedies and it can do no harm to try to get an appointment at the doctors. I thought HRT was for the menopause (once periods had stopped for 12 months or so) or can these be taken to manage perimenopausal symptoms? I would prefer to avoid this for as long as I can although I suppose I need to know what help is out there.
