Tilly might be a lovely name for a little girl in bunches toddling about,
but there isnt going to be a prime minister with a name like that... but if you named them Natalie then you still get the cute nick name but she gets taken seriously when choosing a career.
Not sure I buy that arguement either. Cherie Blair, Condoleezza Rice, Mo Mowlem (think it was actually Maureen, but does anyone actually know, she went as Mo to everyone).

and potentially cause a row in a few years time when Mr A HappySad opens his brothers private and confidential letter. ;):D

Or on the other hand you can have heaps of fun sending off for impotence advice leaflets and rude catalogues and watch them being passed from one family member to the next like a hot potato :p

Being practical and moneysaving, if you give your children the same initials, you'll save a fortune on name tags!

I did that. My children both have the same second name (after their dad) and would you believe that the first three letters of their first names are the same too.

It was funny, when we registered their births (in another country), the chap writing out the receipts, nearly tore up the second one, because he thought he was repeating himself.

Boy? Hope you mean Gabriel in that case! Another reminder to be careful with the spelling on the certificate!

Also make sure the last syllable of the first name doesn't sound the same as the first syllable of the surname, or they just merge together. I had a Sam Mainwaring in my class at school who ended up being called "Sammering!" every time a teacher shouted for him!

I have this problem. My son is Gabriel and even when people see it spelt right he is called Gabrielle by those who don't realise!

It doesn't bother me too much thankfully and he's a bit of a lad so there's no way he could be mistaken for a girl ;)

pat is to stroke/pet, and in Scots and Irish 'ma' translates as 'my', and caulie, as in border collie dog.

So 'stroke my dog' is what the name could be taken to mean .;)

Pat McGroin is allegedly an old scottish football player.

https://www.dirtysounding.com has some very rude examples.:o

ahhh... i got the "Pat ma" bit, but i guess you need a bit of a scottish accent for the "cauly" bit to be obvious! :D

although you did remind me of Holden Mcgroin :rotfl:

Don't want to offend anyone but I really don't like the custom of giving children surnames as first names (Harrison, Taylor, McKenzie, etc). To me they are not 'real' names, so why do it when they are so many lovely names out there?

It's OK for boys, i suppose, but it just seems very unfeminine for girls. They seem particularly keen on it in the US, with girls called things like Parker (always makes me think of the expression 'nosey Parker'!)

Then you have the lovely talented actress called 'Reece Witherspoon'. What an awful name! What's that all about?
