Can't decide on a name for my newborn son

As for the name being in the top 70 for goodness knows how many years, so what? I thought you wanted to choose an unusual name and now you're saying there's lots of them around. You really can't have it both ways!
!
when I called my son Kai, it was not a popular name but it is now, things change, things have to stay dynamic

Ok you offended me!
My little girls name is Eden Jasmine, she starts school in september:(
Eden is lovely, and not very common here. My friend called her little girl Autumn Star, and was horrified to find out Autumn was really popular in America, but we don't live there so don't worry about it.:D:starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin0 -
We had Jai if our dd was a ds. Most names here are pretty 'normal'. We have a little one called Shay who is a boy a few Taylors.
What i personally dont like is when someone takes a name and in order to be different spell it in a different way, at the end of the day Megan (for instance) is going to sound the same if you spell it Megann or Megan. Our dd has a few children in her class with well hearn of names but spelt in a completly different way.
Good lluck with choosing the name for your son0 -

You would hate me then!! I did this because the name looked prettier with our surname. Most children quite like being a little bit different.:starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin0 -
If you put enough thought and consideration into a name, I'm sure you and your child will be happy with your choice.
FWIW, when DH & I were choosing names for our 4 sons, we tried to consider firstly whether the name sounded good, if it suited both a child and an adult, that it couldn't be shortened to a name we didn't like (or might be embarrassing!), and it would be suited to the boardroom or McDonalds (no offence meant to any boardroom workers!!).
For all 4 my husband's favourite choice was Erik  , which was after a friend he'd had in Germany as a child. I wasn't too keen, personally. Then every other name he chose was either a footballers, or another 'personality' figure, and I didn't like the idea of that either.
All I wanted were good solid names, nothing too common where the get known as Amy P., Amy H., etc, as we had in my school, and where the boys named alike were called by surnames.
I know someone who chose to name her child Lee, just so that he'd be the first kid in the class to spell his name! I know someone else who's named her's (intentionally or not) after Thunderbirds characters; thankfully omitting Vergil.
I agree with posters who recommend choosing a well known spelling - my husband wasn't as fortunate and spent his life spelling out his name and confusing people, and then having to send paperwork back for correction on vital documentation. It just saves hassle in the long run, and they do have to live with it.
When we named our firstborn, there were comments like 'I had a fish named Oscar', or it's a good name for a pet, etc., but we did like it, and my bump had been named that for so many months, so it was familiar to us. He loves his name, and his mates like it too. He likes that he can choose to be called Ozzy too. We found it in a baby names book (of 10,000).
Our 2nd born was named after his parental great grandfather, who died a few months before his birth. I had little input, other than to agree it was OK, and he is a Harry (baptised Henry).
Our 3rd was a suspected girl, so my bump had been known to DH and I as Phoebe, but when HE popped out, both DH & I said 'Oh, we have a Myles!'. I preferred the traditional Miles spelling, but DH was pushing too much for Erik at this point and I was being stitched up in the operating theatre, so relented. Myles says he'd prefer the Miles spelling, so I've said it's up to him what he chooses to do. He isn't keen on his middle name: Sidney, but that was DH again - I think Sid James was an influence there (see what I was up against?). Myles likes the fact that he has only met 1 other boy with the same name so far.
Our 4th was known as Charlie all the way through my pregnancy, but we moved just prior to his birth and there was another Charlie about 4 doors down, so we knew there'd be confusion when calling them in for teatime! So, we were in a similar predicament, lots of different names were considered, including Dylan, Alfie and Archie, but they were awful with our surname (some quite rude). In the end, DS2 asked if we could name the baby Max, if it was a boy, after his teddy. We hadn't got a better suggestion, so Max is was (and is). We christened him a big Maximilian, just in case he preferred a longer name later (full or just to Maxim), but he couldn't really be anything other than Max now. Mind you, a neighbour 6 doors down named their baby Max 5 months after us!!! We had to move to avoid teatime confusion.
I don't always know if asking other's for suggestions is ideal, as it's so personal, and a name you might like, may remind them of the school bully boy.
I used to scan the credits at the end of tv programmes for inspiration. Try to have a short-list if possible; you'll be too busy to think once you've had the baby.
Good luck, and enjoy! One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing
Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home0 -
But then, if your name is Becky, you have to spell it out, because it could be Bekki, Beckie, Becci, Same with Vicky, Nicky, Sara/Sarah, Mathew/Matthew, Lee/Leigh etc etc
People with very ordinary names have to spell their name out everytime, anyway because there are so many varients. So I think that you should choose the spelling you like of the name you like.
My sisters friend changed her name as a teenager from Naomi, to Nayomie.
All kids are different and the Hollie that I know, really enjoys being, just a little bit different.:starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin0 -

That really made me giggle!0 -

Beautiful names!:D I couldn't have Eden as it doesn't sit well with my surname and Jasmine was the name my sister wanted in case she has a girl next time so I couldn't steal it. I do like them a lot though, very pretty!0 -

you're from the South of England?
on the original question we've a Matthew already and number 2 is likely to be William(Will), would have been Thomas but that's too many Th's to have in a name
girls we've always found it harder to think of what we like. With our first we had a few names in mind, but when he arrived, he looked more like one name than the other, made it easier to choose and you've other stuff to think about so you tend to be more pragmatic about it0
