random letters - honey just because they may seem weird to you do not mean that they are, Britain is multicultural and people who many not be English (such as myself) may not see these names as wierd, in actual fact, some are very, very common - maybe you need to open your eyes

But I wouldn't go to a foreign country and suggest that people there called their children Mary or John or something similar. If you'd said "these are common names in my country", I wouldn't have made this comment.

And I'm not your honey so don't start patronising me!

As for names like mary and john (which you may see common names in this country) are hebrew names in origin so just as well there were more open minded people in this country than the likes of you when these names were first introduced, they were forgeign names that now have formed into common names in this country

it's about change and names change through time, what was popular 70 years ago like Jean and Audrey and no longer common names and also you may be interested (not that I think you give an dam about any one elses opinion than your own) names like Kai (which has been in the top 100 popular boys names for the past 5 years) is an old Cornish name (along with having other origins, including the Welsh spelling - Cai), Fynn (or Finn) is an old Irish name

You have not offered anything other than critisism of other peoples personal name choices, naming your child is very personal, why on earth would you want to have a pop at people for their choices? if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all, honey ;)

I've offered no other criticism of people's name choices except yours. I wouldn't have commented on yours except for the fact that you made such a point of saying that your choices weren't weird. I only reflected your word back to you, sweety, I would have said nothing more than "unusual."

And spare us the Reader's Digest history course, please; Jean and Audrey were popular names far more recently than 70 years ago and Kai is a girl's name from Hawaii!! Hardly part of multicultural Britain!

Kai is a german name, a cornish name, a welsh name, it's an hawaiian name too, so if you are going to seach google then at least search more than one site love, and as for multicultural Britain, how come it's been in the top 70 most popular names for a boy in this country for the past 5 years??

so, why do you see fit to criticise anyones name choices, are you not a happy person?

I have found that children's names are becoming more and more unusual. In my daughters class there is a Kai, a Kai whos mother renamed him Freedom (when he was 3!), a Siena, a Storm, a Cato, a Rez, a Wilde, a Ger and 3 Henrys and 2 Finlays. There are only 25 children in the class.
What is really funny is on TV the other day, my daughters heard the word 'Freedom' and they were in hysterics, when we asked why they were laughing they said, 'Freedom's not a word, it's a name!' So children are far more accepting than adults.
My friend called her baby 'Neo' last year and gets really hacked off because people hear it as Neil!
Personally my son has a very unusual name, and it really suits him, but for a child with difficulties already it has not made life any easier. But then he does really like it to, as he is the only one.
Our daughters names are fairly unusual, although we called one Freya and were really hacked off when 6 other "Freya's" appeared in the vicinity! And she is the only one of our five who can get beakers etc with her name on and she loves it! It's easier with girls though in that sense, as people may ask what their name is a few times, but always say 'thats pretty' with boys they are more judgemental.
You should choose whatever name you like! Names round here are Rainbow, Sunshine (one of the mum's), Jonah, Sienna X2, Tia X2, Ellis (girl), Tide (boy), Liberty-Grace, Storm X2, Frazer, Bibi-Bell, Teddy, Keddie, Tallis, Daisy, Alma Rosa, Lola, Lila and loads of Millies, Phoebes, Henry s, Maxs Williams etc.
Anything goes, we changed dd3's name when she was 3 weeks old. She was born on Boxing Day and we called her Hollie (major sin) and 8 other Hollys appeared within 2 days, so we changed it. When we had dd4 I was adamant she would be called Tinkerbell or Pixie (but, some may say fortunately!!) OH would have none of it!!!
Have fun choosing names and don't ask anyone's advice, keep it secret, everyone has an opinion and loads make negative comments. If you simply name the baby a name you like people will get over it.

We didn't name our second child for 5 weeks! And the longer we left it the less she looked like anything at all!!!
:starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin

Why do you keep calling a complete stranger "honey " and "love"?

As for the name being in the top 70 for goodness knows how many years, so what? I thought you wanted to choose an unusual name and now you're saying there's lots of them around. You really can't have it both ways!

Anybody can call their children anything they like; it's a free country. However it's also a free country in that everybody has opinions on these names and are free to comment on them on here or anywhere else. I'm sorry that you thought I was rude to you but you've now made up for it. Let's call it quits before we bore everyone silly!

So now we dont say anything to her about names, esp since she emailed me 5 names of each sex and said 'just shut up and chose one'! Ermm like its that easy!

i am so picky with names... its a nightmare
if i said what i actually think about most peoples choices i think i would offend 3/4 of this thread! (but im far too nice for that ;):D )

im a member of a mostly american pregnancy forum and the names they all like are appalling! i think every other child born in the usa this year is going to be called Kaydence, Eden or Bijou, the poor kids....

my only advice is unless you absolutely have too dont pick anything too popular no matter how its spelt, your lovely individual child will be known throughout his school career as Jack 1, 2 or 3, or be more well known by thier surname...

having said that, we have really struggled to pick a boys name... (they just dont come as easily as the girls) and have picked a name that happens to be in the top 20, but i only know one other kid with that name and he is 16 now!
all the boys round here have "trendy" old mens names
jack, billy, alfie, charlie etc *yawn*

    Ok you offended me!

My little girls name is Eden Jasmine, she starts school in september:(

because I think you need a bit of love in your life and what's wrong with being nice to strangers
