I mean that every user is going to get that message about updates, so why not have update on the Start screen by default.

Of course, you can't tell whether the icons there are going to run in the DOS-alike apps or under the Windows desktop, so that might be a bit confusing.

Actually one of the Start menu replacement PD apps I installed on one Window 8 setup went on a bit of a wonk, and when I selected its option to automatically go to the desktop on startup, instead it ran the DOS mail app instead. (That's the kind of thing I'm talking about when I am wary of when installing add-ons.)

Im betting automatic updates are the default setting
so for Joe Average its nothing to worry about

You might be right - I don't know if I changed the setting after install; I generally do, as I have been caught out trying to shut down when my PC has decided it's got a load of updates to do.

The difference is bolting on bits to a commercial release of the OS, where the vendor may choose to make changes that stop it working, including live updates on a daily basis.

MS haven't done daily updates in a long long time, ever heard of Patch Tuesday, which comes once a month and generally lands on a Wednesday for most UK users.

And you act like MS are the only vendor that push out updates that break things. Ubuntu, Apple, MS even ultra-conservative Debian have managed to do it. (The Ubuntu update that broke nVidia cards that was entirely down to infighting on the Ubuntu team was LOLworthy.)

The Windows 8.1 update, a new version of the OS, does break StartIsBack, but fortunately the only 8.1 release available right now is a developer preview, will be a couple of months before that update hits end users so it should all be sorted by then.
