And for me, in Windows 8, It's Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Update.
Choices and customisation are good0 -

So, substituting:3. Move the mouse to the bottom left corner and right-click, to bring up the menu.with:3. Press Windows key.How do you pin it to your Start page?
right click
pin to start menu
it really is that simple
or if you wish you can move the mouse to the left corner, left click and it takes you to the start page
just like the old start menu, but full screen0 -
The difference is bolting on bits to a commercial release of the OS, where the vendor may choose to make changes that stop it working, including live updates on a daily basis.I love how someone who is advocating Linux then goes on to say "without unsupported freeware".
Double standards much?
Comparing a Linux release against an individual point-solution app for Windows is not really like for like, and the support of Linux is probably a lot better than that of Windows.
(And of course, support can be purchased for many Linux releases.)
So it's not double standards - it's having an appreciation of the way IT works.0 -
Ah, I get you, the Software Update item within control panel.right click
pin to start menu

So why don't they do that for you out of the box, as a bit of joined up thinking in light of the message on the login screen?0 -
My lap top is windows 8, and does not have a touch screen. I could not get a good deal on windows 7, so bit the bullet, and found windows 8 very frustrating for about 4 weeks. 3 months on it's fine, once you get used to it.0

The start page is as configurable as the old start menu
you can pin things to it as before
not really sure the message you would want
also the search feature(mouse to right corner) is quick to find stuff for those who dont know where stuff is0 -
I mean that every user is going to get that message about updates, so why not have update on the Start screen by default. The start page is as configurable as the old start menu

not really sure the message you would want

Of course, you can't tell whether the icons there are going to run in the DOS-alike apps or under the Windows desktop, so that might be a bit confusing.
Actually one of the Start menu replacement PD apps I installed on one Window 8 setup went on a bit of a wonk, and when I selected its option to automatically go to the desktop on startup, instead it ran the DOS mail app instead. (That's the kind of thing I'm talking about when I am wary of when installing add-ons.)0
