Transparency of window contents has existed since Windows 2000. It's just developers of individual apps need to implement it.

I'm fairly sure there's software out there to enable it for all windows if that's what you're after.
So did the developers of explorer (wondering whom they might be...) implement it for folder windows?

You log in (sign in is a synonym) and then go to Windows Update and install them.
Where's that on the home screen?

Nope. TBH window transparency isn't that useful a feature anyway, it's just a bit of bling that Linux users love to go on about, hency why if you want it on Windows you need a third party tweak.

Dunno, I never use it. For me it's Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Update, same place it's been since Vista.

Ah, the dismissive answer; a feature isn't there so it can't be any use.

But Windows 8 hasn't got a Start menu, so you get told about something and then it's not obvious what to do about it.

I think Windows 8 will encourage people to move elsewhere.

Most of the NHS still uses windows XP the machines come with a 3ghz cpu and they stick 1 gig of ram in and wonder why the damn things take 15 mins to fully load up.

I didn't mind XP it was good for it's day and not bad now, but then everything has to move on, I've had windows 7 since it came out and moved onto windows 8 after the beta test and bought the £25 deal. I actually like windows 8 I like the UI as well I like the fact I can have my most used icons there to use rather than having to mess with the desktop part of it and only go into that when needed.

But I guess each to their own....I'm back on windows 7 atm because I had an issue with my Agility 3 drive locking up sometimes on boot up.

Its not just a quick boot up you get with an SSD the whole system performs faster. but then it depends what you want to do with it.

That's less to do with 1GB of RAM and more to do with being loaded up full of corporate bloatware, security suites, and probably also a billion group policies stuck in Active Directory, half of which nobody even remembers what they do but nobody wants to change them.

You could load them up to 4gig with SSDs and while they'd improve I reckon you'd still have a 10 minute login time.

I really isn't fair to judge an OS by it's performance in a terrible corporate IT setup. I bet you run McAfee too!

XP 3GHz 1GB can load in 30 seconds, add another 30 seconds tops for it to attach to a network and do updates.

If it takes 15 minutes, someone isn't doing their job, or more likely no-one is managing the contract.

It's always like this in government-style IT setups. Especially if you're running third party management programs, full disk encryption and McAfee.

Yes it can be done properly, but it rarely is, and you're never going to get it down to 30s and meet the additional security requirements that somewhere like the NHS will have to meet.
