I am looking to replace my xp tower. I have just ordered a dell windows 8 desktop tower and am wondering if i have made a mistake and should have got a win 7. I'm worried because of all the negative comments about win 8. The monitor I have at the moment is not a touchscreen. Would this still work with win 8? Would you recommend I change the order to a windows 7?

Thank you

did you upgrade ram in the old one?

it will still work without a touchscreen, which is a bit gimmicky imo.

did you use voucher codes, and cashback? Do they actually give a W7 option?

Windows 8 does have some big changes from Windows 7, some people don't spend any time with it to get used to the changes and post negative comments, others do spend the time or modify it slightly to behave more like Windows 7 and have no issues.

Windows 8 has a fully functional desktop interface which is very similar to Windows 7, you can add a start menu back in and with a few small changes you can basically ignore the entire touch aspect of the system (which I do with my non-touch systems). There's a few improvements with Windows 8, particularly the quicker performance and responsiveness over Windows 7 which I prefer.

Closed, I upgraded the ram and its been working really well.

The only reason I thought of getting a new one is because I heard that xp wont be supported by ms next year.

I had totally forgotten about vouchers and cashback but used my works discount scheme to get 10% off. I only ordered it this afternoon and am now having second thoughts about whether to cancel the order.

    Any bits of advice?

no support, won't stop it working

depending on what you bought, vouchers and cashback can add up to more than 10%, there's 12% off on inspiron desktops atm, and cashback on top.

    Thanks for that john.

I ordered a laptop for hubby and pc for the house. I think i'll cancel the pc if you dont think it will be much of an issue with microsoft next year, closed. I'll also see about reordering the laptop with the extra cashback etc. Thanks for the reminder.

I went from XP to Windows 8 on a netbook (non-touch screen) and it's perfectly adequate.
Windows 8 appears to be like Marmite, you love it or you hate it.
Stopping support for XP means no further security issues or software bugs will be fixed, and the security/AV industry won't be updating their products to work with XP forever.
Some are happy with the risks but I for one am already saving to update the PC!

I've got a w98 machine, still works, not riddled with infections, and has a working AV. I doubt AV companies will drop XP support for some time, there's still too many out there
