He booked a surprise holiday to Switzerland for 5 days around my birthday, I only found out which country we were going to at the airport. He packed most of our stuff and wouldn't let me near the cases. On the day of my birthday we left the hotel, he said he forgot something and then re-appeared with a massive rucksack, wouldnt show me what was in it. We took trains that went up the mountains to the foothills of the Eiger, and then onto the Jungfrau railway which goes through the mountains and comes at at the top of the mountain itself. He then opened the rucksack to reveal new coat, hat, gloves he'd bought me (all in various shades of purple, my favourite colour) and we went out onto the snow covered plateau. I don't like heights, I don't like being cold so he said it must be hell for me, and then pointed out how things were frozen. That's when it clicked as he'd always said (after having a painful divorce) that he'd not ask anyone to marry him again until hell was frozen over. He then produced a ring - amethyst to keep the purple theme - and properly asked me to marry him.
He'd already told his kids before we left what he was planning, and asked permission from my sons (though if they'd said no I doubt he'd have taken any notice lol)0 -
Ah well, thanks to her Mum it took two attempts.
I met my Lovely when her Mum married my Uncle, and we became cousins. She was eleven and I was twenty one. We started "going serious" when she was seventeen. I had planned to take her out for a meal and propose when she was eighteen on the anniversary of the day we met. She didn't twig the significance of the date, but her Mum did, and told her I was planning to pop the question. This had all been preceded by her asking quite pointedly if I was going to ask her to marry me. I said, "but you said you wanted a long courtship." She said, "Oh, I meant a long engagement."
So, we had finished the main course and I was getting ready to get down on one knee when she said, (joklingly) that her Mum reckoned I was going to propose. Well the look on my face must have been a picture because she clapped her hand to her mouth and gasped because she realised I really was going to and she had spoiled it. I then proceeded NOT to propose for a fortnight.
I caught her completely by surprise a fortnight later when I proposed on her doorstep as I was saying goodnight.
The following day we went in to town and chose engagement and wedding rings, paying for them with the money I had drawn out the day before to make that month's mortgage payment.
Next year is our thirtieth wedding anniversary. :T
As others have said, the asking (and the reply) is more important than the method. Having said that, she will never forget no matter how you ask.I married my cousin. I had to...I don't have a sister. All my screwdrivers are cordless."You're Safety Is My Primary Concern Dear" - Laks0 -
It was Christmas morning, and we were sitting on the floor opening our presents, then when we'd finished, I stood up to start tidying the paper etc away, and he told me to stay standing up because there was something he wanted to ask me. There was no big flouncy speech or anything (thank god!), just a simple 'Will you marry me?' He did go onto one knee though!
He picked the ring which was fine by me, as I'm really not a big jewellery person anyhow. It was a style that I wouldn't have probably even thought about choosing, so the boy did good! So it just goes to show, he knows me better than I know myself, because it's perfect for me, and he knew that! I guess though if your OH is big on jewellery she might not appreciate you choosing it for her.0 -
having been with oh for almost 10 years the whole marriage thing had become a standing joke, oh had even had my ring finger measured! and we had look at rings in the window.
I want to go to St petersburg in the snow, so we went 18 months ago and snowmobile across Lake Onega to Kizhi island (the wooden churches),
Where whilst walking around with the tour group oh asked a guide to take a photo of the to of us together, He took 1 and oh said no we need another photo. i said like this and prentened to strangle him, he said no i thought like this and dropped to 1 knee and held up a ring!
Which I was terrified he or I would drop in the snow! :-) He wanted an answer so I said I'd think about it! ... about 1/2 hr later he said he wouldn't let me back on the snowmobile if I didn't give a real answer! Yes....0 -
Mine is definitely not one of the romantic ones :rotfl:0

I went to meet my OH after work one afternoon and he told me that he'd just had a nice tax rebate and would I rather we spend it on a holiday or an engagement ring?
Going shopping for a nice sparkly ring is the best shopping trip ever!:D:D
(He did propose properly, on one knee, about two minutes after I'd given birth. I can remember the midwife going "Awwww")

Anyone asking my dads permission first would get a big fat NO WAY!
He asked if he could get me a ring for my birthday the next month. So I arranged for us to be in Disneyland paris, top of the castle, for the occasion. Think we both "proposed" at the agreed time and then announced it to the world via facebook.0 -
My husband proposed the evening before my 21st birthday. We had talked about it briefly, just that we wanted to get married one day! It was snowing really hard (December 2010) and we had just picked his new car up, he'd told me before we were going out for dinner, thought nothing of it, just a birthday meal! The taxi was late and he was starting to pace the lounge up and down which I thought was a little strange but he's very impatient and I thought it was because he didn't want to ruin my birthday. He then rung my mum who ended up coming to get us and take us into town, we walked a little way to meet her and because it was so cold I'd snuggled in to him (turns out I was leaning right on the ring box, I had no idea lol, didn't feel it!)
When we finally got to the restaurant, we had a normal meal but I did notice he was on his phone more than normal.. Again, turns out he was texting my mum and brother saying he was nervous, he had also been texting them all day saying the same thing haha! After the meal we said we would book a taxi and then go for a drink, so after booking it, we went for a walk down to the cathedral whisks it was still snowing, nice and romantic then all of a sudden he just got down on one knee and proposed. I just yelped and started to cry and laugh, all in a state of disbelief and shock and wow! The ring was beautiful, fitted perfectly, would have been exactly what I would have chosen and the moment was just magical.
We then got in the taxi to grace to my mums where she had arranged for friends to come round with champagne
Never forget it
Good luck when you do it!!Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j0 -
Girlfriend told me she was pregnant so after a long discussion on the reliability of birth control and several other things I said we'd better get married then.0
