Hob's (Hair on broadway) Salons have now stopped taking Amex. Didn't see it mentionned anywhere else in the thread, so i figured i would put it up here, Fenwick and Hamleys take it (probably seems a no brainer) as do Hilton Hotels (Worldwide) and the Marriot in the UK and US. Sorry if those are reposts (just skimmed as briefly as i could over a 500 page thread!)

Game is a confusing one; they dont accept it in store now but do online - i think that is to do with the fact they cut back on costs of staff for online purchases and dont have to accept it through the pin reader which they generally have problems with.

So might have to use the mastercard secondary to those who wont accept Amex. Unless anyone has other ideas???

Hmmm, well its somewhat of a halfass approach but if its for rewards Lloyds have their "duo" card, which has one account but comes with an Amex and a Mastercard.

I have that airmiles card and have to say i have never used the Mastercard in over 2 years, its the freaking principle at hand! (Drives my wife literally up the wall as i try avoid shopping anywhere that doesnt take it).

But i guess you could go with that but Lloyds only offer one fifth of the rewards per use of the Mastercard as oppossed to the Amex...yeah, it sucks. (The airmiles take a while to clock up too).

Hope that helps - its an option i dont use though, my best way of trying to talk shops into accepting is to talk to them about products and seem reasonably interested and then only to say i'll pass and pay more for it elsewhere as the other place takes Amex, when they notify me that they themselves dont accept it. Cringeworthy, but for a worthy cause imo.

Don't give up on it though as the list of those accepting is growing more than those declining, it is well worth the hassel of going through the pain and annoyance of figuring out who accepts it..
  • I'm thinking about getting an AMEX card. My Barclaycard 'cashback' card gives me half what it did when I signed-up. It was the same when I signed up for a Morgan Stanley one years ago in the respect that the cashback was good at first and then got worse!

Amex's cashback rate does drop down a bit after the first year too but it is far better than any other card about for the bang for your buck in regards to rebates at the end of the year.

I've done exactly the same. Just keep the Barclaycard now for the odd time when Amex is not accepted, but i reduced the Barclaycard credit limit right down to cut down the exposure on my credit rating.
  • HSBC secure card processing does not allow AMEX so any businesses taking card payments by phone cannot take AMEX
  • I do have heard allot about Amex cards and some places that are here in list, where Amex is not accepted. I was thinking that, once I will start owning credit card, I will go for Amex but, Now i am confused what card I use.
  • As a small retailer we do not accept AMEX, the reason being they are too damned expensive, people forget that the retailers get charged for every card transaction that goes through their machine (credit or Debit Card) and AMEX are by far the most expensive.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
