I like to shop at a number of retailers who don't accept Amex in store (Cargo for example) however they accept PayPal online. I have linked my PayPal account to my Amex card which means that I can carry on using it albeit indirectly - and you still get the Amex benefits!

Be aware that for purchases between £100 and £30,000 you won't get Section 75 protection if you use PayPal.

Possibly because the fuel is a low profit item and the merchant charge for tesco will be higher than other cards therefore they might have deliberatly cancelled accepting it on their fuel systems....although i`ve used it instore no problems. Has it ever worked at their pumps or was it your first time?

My Amex wont work at Tesco Pay @ Pump facilities but works okay in the kiosk and Tesco stores! Complained to Tesco who said it was an Amex problem who said it was a Tesco problem.

My AMEX has never worked at the pumps although Tesco customer support says it should. To late now really because I'm past the 5% cash back introductory offer period so I missed out on capitalising on my high commute costs which is the primary reason I got an AMEX card. Pity :(
  • Ryan Air and Monarch airlines don't take Amex. Also some Costas' do and some don't

Cafe Nero don't accept it either which is a shame.

Really surprised that Costa Coffee at Gatwick Airport do not accept Amex. Luckily I had a fiver, otherwise it would have been even more of an embarrassment.

i once worked for Amex, and there was a big effort to get retailers to come / stay on board.. main rebuttal was their high fees, which they tried to justify by saying their service was much better, and that THEIR cardholders were more likely to spend on high value items (= higher profit for the shops..?)

having also worked in several shops, a card is a card is a card.. so long as it gets aproved, i dont really care what colour / brand it is.

.. and surely 'Mr rich guy' is going to have resources to buy xyz, regardless of what card they use to pay..?

(my last edit, honest!).. many years ago, in a far off land (Germany, actually), i was on holiday and went to pay for a meal with my amex card (then at staff rates!) at Pizza Hut, to be told they didnt take ANY cards.. ?! cue a quick dash to nearest cash till..
