What about abroad? I've had problems paying with Amex in (ironically) America
  • I applied for and got the Amex Platinum Cashback card recently hoping to use the 5% cashback over 3 months to best effect. :T

Of the (around) £2000 I have spend so far on Xmas presents, car service, building and contents insurance and a few other bits and bobs, I have probably only been able to spend about £350 using the Amex card as it is just not accepted anywhere near widely enough.

I will get as much as I can out of the 5% cashback, but as soon as the 3 months are up, I will not be using the card any more and will continue with my Egg Money card which gives me 1% on everything and is taken by EVERYONE (except possibly Ryan Air that charges a fortune to use it).

I knew that Amex was not very popular, but had no idea as to the extent.

If I stop using the Amex card, can I cancel it there and then and get the cashback earned, or will I have to wait until the end of the first year to get it?
  • I literally found out a few hours ago that prweb.com do not accept Amex. If you're into that sort of thing that is :)

Read the Terms and Conditions you signed up to. I signed up a couple of years ago and my T&Cs say:
17.2 The rebate will be paid by us at each Card anniversary Date on the expenditure that has taken place during the preceding 12 months. [...] Payment will be made by crediting the account.

My card company has just given up in the business (GM) so I am hunting around for a new credit card provider. In the past I had AMEX but gave up when I had to start taking two cards with me when I went shopping.
AMEX was a pain as a lot of shops and retailers would not take it because of the charges they incurred. It looks as though not a lot has change with AMEX although the number accepting is higher than it was. I was hoping to get a card that gave me a reward for using it but without the hassle of being told, "Sorry we do not take AMEX".
Any ideas as to which way I should go? I pay my account off as soon as I receive my invoice.
  • Not so, generaly people just use another card, but then we are lucky Tesco are only a fairly small threat to us, however these days small retailers on the high street have to compete with the likes of Tesco etc who seem to be hell bent on putting us all out of business, margins are already so tight we just cannot afford the extra expense. I'm afraid this thread reads a bit like a name and shame which is a bit unfair to the smaller retailers, perhaps it should be AMEX who are the bad guy because of the extortionate rates they charge retailers for the privelidge of being allowed to accept thier cards.

If I am using my corporate AMEX and a shop does not accept it then I shop elsewhere as it makes it easier to expense. There are many times when I have ordered a drink etc and have changed my mind when they say they do not take AMEX.

This is fair enough if you can control the use immediately. Problems start when you have been going around the DIY store for a time and get to the checkout with 1001 items only to be told "Sorry". It has happened to me.
  • Why is it that some don't accept AMEX? I tried on a coffee website and it wouldn't work!
