  • Alternatively small businesses could charge for processing AMEX. Airlines do it with most credit cards..

    Sure, they could.

But like with most other businesses that don't, the consumer will have the choice of whether to go to a competitor or not.

Same as with airlines, and the competition already exists as far as retail goes.

True. But the choice is there..
  • Why is it that American Express is not accepted at so many places? I never bothered to figure out why. I assume they are "exclusive" - more like they must charge too much. You can't trust a credit card that has a missing digit. but seriously, why do so many retailers not accept it?
  • Actually, fresh water is in a short supply. Due to the rapid population increase, fresh water consumption remains great. Besides, with the development of industry, more water is needed. Moreover, a lot of our rivers and lakes have been so polluted that water from them is undrinkable.

Amex charge something like 4% to retailers to use their card and I believe other cards charge c. 2.5%. I wonder, in fact, if Tesco, Sainsbury's and other large businesses do a deal with Amex and perhaps are charged less than the 4% in return for the large amount of business it attracts. I don't know, I'm only guessing, but such large companies certainly have the bargaining power.

If a business can't afford to pay Amex's fees then I don't see they have much choice but to refuse acceptance. I have another card in case it's refused.

Regarding the list being up to date. That's difficult, as some places seem to chop and change acceptance. My local Chinese restaurant accepted it, then stopped, and now accepts it again. Even different branches of the same company can differ, although sometimes that can be because they are franchises.

  • I like to shop at a number of retailers who don't accept Amex in store (Cargo for example) however they accept PayPal online. I have linked my PayPal account to my Amex card which means that I can carry on using it albeit indirectly - and you still get the Amex benefits!

  • Ryan Air and Monarch airlines don't take Amex. Also some Costas' do and some don't

Cafe Nero don't accept it either which is a shame.
