I've just got a new amex card after a few problems and the first time I tried to use it I was refused.

This thread needs to be re-jigged so it just shows a list of retailers who do and don't currently accept amex.

That list is seriously abridged, though. But helpful starting point I guess.
  • I've recently opened the above card (just before the £15 cashback through MoneySupermarket!) so as to get cashback on petrol, car servicing, etc., etc. Have been shocked to find that not every retailer wants to know! Webbs of Wychbold Craft Department and my local garage servicing my car are just two so far. Neither of them knew why the card wasn't accepted. It's rather unfortunate about my garage because today I've spent £139 on the annual service. I'm so glad I didn't close my other card which gives me vouchers (not so beneficial but better than nothing).

But grateful thanks Martin for ALL the financial advice you have given me over the years! :kisses3:
  • Tried using my Amex in B&Q today who always used to take it, but now they don't !

I do wonder how it is that Amex can lose a large retailer like B&Q. Surely they must be worth hanging on to even if Amex have to offer them a really good deal on the costs involved.

Yet to be let down by Amex; even the small Japanese restaurant next to my flat accepts it! I also made a substantial purchase from Cancom (Apple dealer) and though they didn't accept Amex, asked if I was willing to pay the 3% service charge normally levied on them so as to use it. I agreed and got my rewards points too!

    No complaints so far...

Agreed, I buy my lunch daily from Boots using my Amex card.

Most Boots will accept it, but it generally depends on the size of the store, some smaller ones still don't because the company don't deem it worthwhile to pay the higher charges on Amex in them.

Additionally, the system for processing Amex seems to go down independently of the main card processing one, thus there will be times when Amex won't work, even where it normally might.

Hi I am thinking about getting the mbna Amex for supermarket shopping because they are currently offering 0% interest for 12 months on spends over 100 and for food I believe you get 1.5% cash back which is better than clubcard. I think i have understood this right and if so seems a good card to stooze with especially as I will be making some other purchases as I am hoping to move - seems a good time? Anyone have any comments on this - something I have not thought of?
