Having now applied for a card (having checked first that it would be accepted at the shops we generally use) - I thought I'd add to the list of accepted shops - I contacted John Lewis (who weren't listed) and they confirmed that all John Lewis and Waitrose stores accept amex and do not make any charge for using any credit card.

I might add I was looking to change following really poor service from my existing card provider and the responses to a few queries I raised was very polite and helpful - so good to have nice service.

One point to note in the small print - if you use the card for foreign transactions (holiday or internet shopping) then Amex add 2.99% to the price of whatever you have bought - not sure if you get a better exchange rate though.

Boots accepted Amex 2 days ago.

John Lewis accepted Amex in May.

    My local Coop takes Amex.

Exchange rate not at all competitive. If spend is in currency other than pounds it is converted to dollars first and then to pounds.
  • This is a nice long list. Could be helpful for me someday.
  • Selfridges do!
  • AMEX is a bit sensitive compared to Visa and Mastercard as these 2 options can be used anywhere around the globe and even in the Internet. I have been checking 'whoacceptamex' site from time to time to get up to date on those sites or companies accept AMEX. You could also add all of these on your lists.

Agreed, I buy my lunch daily from Boots using my Amex card.

There is a very much out of date list on the first page of this thread. Boots takes Amex with no problem.
