Thats because amex / american express is american based

And the aquiring process is different they process all the cards together, in the UK Visa & Mastercard are processed together, Amex is a seperate aggreement & discount rate is normally more.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

London Midland do not accept Amex (this includes self-service ticket machines). However if you want to buy tickets for any of their services you could go to another train operator's web site such as Cross Country or Virgin Trains that do accept.

London Midland DO accept Amex (I have used it many times), and always have. The self service machines have problems with some of the cards issued, but the staffed windows do.

On train the guard may have to key enter the card number due to the chip card issue.

I can confirm that as of yesterday, B&Q still do not accept Amex.

Does anyone know how much American Express charge retailers per transaction and how this compares with other credit card issuers?

The discount rates are in the region of:
    V/M - 0.85 to 4%
    Amex - 1.4% to 6.9%
    Diners - 1.9% to 4%
    Switch / Solo / Maestro : 12.5p to around 40p per trans
Visa Debit (all brands) 12.5p to 40p per trans

The rates are based on risk, rate of turnover and type of business. Other fee / charges apply, generally you will be looking at Terminal Rental, Polling Fees, Start up costs & minimum charges.

Probably too late now, but they do. I bought my sister's bike there.
