  • One more for the list

    Screwfix Direct they accept online but NOT in the trade counters.

    When asked why, they said it was due to the majority of Amex cards not having chip and pin.
    Hmm funny that mines had chip and pin for a long time!

    My local Screwfix stopped taking Amex about a month ago. When a Merchant stops taking it, I don't think you really need to ask why - the excessive charge is usually the reason.

    The other day when paying my bill at a bed and breakfast I noticed that an extra charge of 2.5% was added to bills paid by Credit Card. Being on a 5% cashback with Amex it was an easy matter to work out that I would still be better off paying the extra 2.5% then getting 5% cashback. Using simple figures, if your bill was £100 then:

    £100 + 2.5% = £102.50.
    £102.50 - 5% = £102.50 - £5.13 = £ 97.37

    It then occurred to me it would be useful to know the threshold percentage where I cross over from being better off to not being better off. I have to admit, I asked a friend of mine who is a mathematician, and he came up with this formula:

    r = (100 x s) / (100 - s)

    where r is the percentage rate we're looking for, and s is the cashback rate, as a percentage value, i.e. use 5 for 5% (not 0.05).

    For low rates of cashback, r is actually quite close to s, for example, for 5% cashback (s = 5), r works out to 5.26%. That means if you were charged 5.26% for using your cashback credit card, you would break even.

    For higher values of s, r works out different, e.g. if s is 15% (and I know there's no card offering that at present, shame) then r works out at 17.65%. That means you would still gain from your 15% cashback for any charges below 17.65%.

    I hope this is useful.
