  • Just a word to anyone signing up to an AMERICAN EXPRESS cashback card ...... I did this through a Nectar link some time ago and to date, I have only EVER had this accepted on 2 occasions whereas all my other cards have been no prob. Amex seems a dirty word, especially if buying anything off the internet, so be warned that the cashback may be few and far between as so few retailers accept it!confused-smiley-013.gif
  • just a word of warning to anyone who wants to sign up for the AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM 5% CASHBACK CARD.
ive had mine for 2 months now (5% for first 3 months only) and trying to put almost all of my spending on it to get as much cashback as possible in 3 months.
i am finding this almost impossible to do and ALWAYS take my good old VISA card (1% cashback) with me as a last resort.
"sorry we dont accept american express" seems to be the general reply!!
    petrol station-NO, restuarant-NO, cineworld-NO, holiday booking-NO, snowdome- NO, local shops-NO, NO,NO,NO!!!!!????
WHERE THE BLOODY HELL CAN YOU USE IT???
its about as much use as an edjector seat in a helicopter!!!

USELESS!!! plus the fact that i have to carry my other cards around as well as cover.
(as us over 45's would say "american express - that'll do nicely"" NOT!!!

Just this month - I've used it at Amazon, B&Q, Tesco, Somerfield, Lovefilm, Shell (several branches of), Waterstones, Halfords, My local council, Our local indian restuarant, our local pizza place, The Body Shop, Next, M&S, Woolworths, Boots ...

I could go on further ...

Likewise. The only places I've come across which don't accept it are certain cocktail bars, and small family-run businesses like B&Bs, where they've realised that the amount of business which would be generated by accepting amex won't justify the cost.

Also, it's very expensive to use amex on Thetrainline.com due to the admin charge.

What I will say though is that since getting my cashback card I've become very grateful for those little stickers in shop windows advertising which cards are accepted :D

I've recently got myself AmEx for the cashback and also quidco. Great stuff. Not had any major problems so far. Rule of thumb seems to be major high street stores accept, local businesses don't. Got a new fireplace and the local shop didn't accept AmEx. No problem really as the cashback is just a nice extra. I think I've just accepted I will not change my shopping habits, but if the retailer accepts AmEx, then it's a bonus.
