I think its to do with the higher than normal chages amex make to the retailer, I guess the relativly low use of the card when compared to visa/mastercard wont help either

Why is it that some people accept it and other dnt?
Amex charges are very high compared with mastercard/visa so retailers need to be able to justify it.
Some businesses such as small ones or those with very low margins simply cannot afford to do so.
There may also be some fixed fees (rather than % fees) which are bad for small businesses whereas a fixed fee (say £40 per month) is no big deal for a large supermarket.

Each individual business has to weigh up how much business they will lose by not taking it.
Most people will simply use another card rather than walking away so they probably don't lose that much business, but it's an individual decision.

I need a cashback card to use mainly at petrol stations for fuel. I fill up about twice a week. Is Amex widely accepted at filling stations and is this the card for me?

My commiserations on having to fill up so often - I know exactly the situation you are in.

Amex is widely accepted by the major petrol stations/companies, but be careful at the small and independent places (they charge rip-off rates anyway) - they might not accept it.

Some recent acceptences of my American Express Platinum Credit Card:

    A local chemist!
    Ideal World
    QVC
    Robert Dyas
    Subway
    Wimpy

I was particularly pleased with QVC, not only do I get 5% cashback through the Amex, but 5% through TopCashBack as well!

I'm really pleased with my Amex platinum card, especially the 5% cashback for the first 3 months and have successfully used it in many places, however I'm struggling to find a camera supplier that takes it, I often use Lasky's for electrical stuff and they do take Amex but they don't have the camera that I want.

Ignore me, I've just sussed that Amazon take it

  • I can't find anything in the thread so does anyone know whether "DirectGov" accepts Amex? My car tax is due at the end of the month and although there is a £2.50 surcharge for using credit cards I'd get back £6 as I'm in my 5% period.
