I've been to seven shops today and only 2 took amex, the cashback rate might be good but where do you spend on this card?

I think experience varies.
I've had lots of places not accept it recently e.g.

Kwik-fit (on-line MOT)
Yves Rocher on-line

RAC no longer accept Amex for Membership Sales.

In 3 years working for them only 1 person paid by Amex.
