The only things that seem expensive are the fleece and the polo shirt. Presumably you don't need to buy both a sweatshirt and fleece, he would never wear both together and if he's wearing a jumper he can wear a plain polo underneath.

If you think £44 is a lot, wait until you have to buy for secondary school.

Wow I would be snapping that up! Wait for the prices of senior school!

I don't think you'll have a leg to stand on legally, that is very good value for money, considering the cost of everyday good quality clothing'.

My youngest twos's school charge £10 per sweatshirt, £8 per polo shirt and £20 for an optional school fleece. £5 PE tshirt, 4 book bag and £6 PE bag.

    Hi All,

I am not sure this is the right forum but I would like to ask for advice on this if its worth taking up or not.

My kid's school recently turned to an Academy and they are charging extortionate prices for the new uniform which is compulsory come September.

If the prerogatives of the school/council/government is for the kids to be educated, why make it compulsory for pupils to buy uniforms only from the school at prices that is not fair to anyone but the school.

I need advice please or suggestions if there is any existing thread/action along this line.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sweatshirt £6.95
    Polo shirt with Badge £5.95
    Tie £3.50
    School Fleece £15.45
    PE T-Shirt £3.95
    Book Bag £4.56
    PE Bag £3.90

    Total £44.26

I appreciate this is nothing compare to what some other schools are charging or that some people might consider this whining unnecessarily but I am sure a few other people feels the same way.
The same set of uniform cost far less if bought from else where and considering how fast kids grow, one might end up spending a fortune on a yearly basis if you have a medium school age family.

My older son's sweatshirts are about £12 each, and that is cheap to average for this area (North West England, deprived town). Polo shirts with the school badge are about £7-8.

My younger son's PE polo shirt is £10.95, average for this area. His tie was £4.50.

Wait until you have to buy a blazer - I think I paid £34 last year

Surely there would be a transition period, if you are going from one uniform to another? when ours changed to Academy, there was a years grace, so pupils who already had old uniform that still fitted, could wear it for another year before buying new.

Also, you don't mention trousers/skirts, so presume you can get those from Asda/Tesco? I buy the logo'ed stuff as required, and trousers from Tesco :)

Sorry OP, doesn't look remotely extortionate to me. It actually looks pretty cheap.

My school skirt cost £35 in 1992, and the school jumpers were £38.

my initial thought.. get a grip... if you buy Clarks shoes they will cost more than £44.. are you taking legal action against them too???

Seriously.. that is really cheap.. my sons uniform was over £400 per year!! His blazer was £150 and the hat £70..

count your blessings! At the highschool I have 3 attending their uniform prices are 3 or 4 times that!!!

Tomorrow I am paying £9 each for my daughters sweatshirts for nursery.. non-compulsory I know but still.. a decent sweatshirt from anywhere else would be that too!

By wearing a uniform, you are saving on wear and tear on his other clothes. It also stops poorer children being picked on for not having designer gear.
I personally think that £45 is reasonable.
