Legal action against School due to the cost of School uniforms, Please advise

Hi All,

I am not sure this is the right forum but I would like to ask for advice on this if its worth taking up or not.

My kid's school recently turned to an Academy and they are charging extortionate prices for the new uniform which is compulsory come September.

If the prerogatives of the school/council/government is for the kids to be educated, why make it compulsory for pupils to buy uniforms only from the school at prices that is not fair to anyone but the school.

I need advice please or suggestions if there is any existing thread/action along this line.

Thanks in advance.

Sweatshirt £6.95
Polo shirt with Badge £5.95
Tie £3.50
School Fleece £15.45
PE T-Shirt £3.95
Book Bag £4.56
PE Bag £3.90

Total £44.26

I appreciate this is nothing compare to what some other schools are charging or that some people might consider this whining unnecessarily but I am sure a few other people feels the same way.
The same set of uniform cost far less if bought from else where and considering how fast kids grow, one might end up spending a fortune on a yearly basis if you have a medium school age family.

    I don't think that's extortionate at all

30 years ago when I was at school I bet my mum paid as much if not more.

Just the fact that so many supermarkets do school clothing now, people can get it cheaper

Seriously, I wouldn't be taking legal action over £44

I don't think you would have just cause for any legal action.

I don't think that is too much to pay, sorry
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.

The only item on there that seems expensive is the polo shirt and fleece, and you can get away with not buying expensive jumpers/fleeces, my son wears a vest in winter, thermal if really cold. The pe shirt is actually very cheap! The bags seem ok depends if any good, not sure what you mean by legal action against the school? You plan to sue? You want compensation?

You have to clothe your child in any case - I cannot believe that you would not have to buy more clothing before September - so just buy the uniform.

Perhaps I didnt make my whole intention clear , this is just not about the cost but the fact that kids are not allowed into class if the uniform is not 100% as provided by the school, I dont want compensation but I am talking more along the line of allowing parents to decide if they want to buy from the school or elsewhere, as long as it confirms to the uniform standards

I think your getting value for your money. My son's school uniform costs are £15 for a sweatshirt, £10 for a polo shirt and £25 for a fleece jacket!

That is alot, especially considering you will have to buy at least 2 of some of the items.

I personally would only buy what I thought was reasonable, for example I wouldnt buy all of the PE kit (especially the bag). That is an unnecessary buy and no school can enforce its purchase.

    So I would buy:

    Sweatshirt £6.95 - x2
Polo shirt with Badge £5.95 - x1 (and then I would buy plan shirts from tesco)
    Tie £3.50 - x1
School Fleece £15.45 - No, my kids have coats.
    PE T-Shirt £3.95 - x1
Book Bag £4.56 - No they have bags
PE Bag £3.90 - They have bags

    Total £26.30?!

    Touch my bum :money:
    Tesco - £1000 , Carpet - £20, Barclaycard - £50, HSBC - £50 + Car - £1700
    SAVED =£0
    Debts - £2850

Because that is when the school actually turns into an Academy.
