Just jumping in to ask a quick question. How can I stop sleeping on my back? I cannot seem to fall asleep in any other position at the moment and it's bothering me. I know during the first trimester it's ok, but I've read that sleeping on your side (mainly left) is how you're supposed to sleep after that.
TIA!0 -
Congrats Scarlet
Hope to see you and vic over in the next big scary thread soon!0 -

I got a long pillow at about 18 weeks and started sleeping with it under the bump and between my legs. There are lots of different types/ shapes, the one I chose was a mothercare one in three sections - under head, under bump and between legs. I find I sleep best with just the bottom two sections in the pillow case so no extra support at the top (I was waking up wrestling with it!). It did help me get in the habit of side sleeping though I do still wake up on my back every now and then...
Watching 1977 top of the pops on bbc4 and baby is loving the disco music from the amount of kicks I'm getting!! :rotfl:fran-o0 -

I read up on this that other day and it basically said not to worry until you're heavily pregnant, and that it's better to get sleep than not because you're uncomfortable. And that when it's no longer good to sleep on your bank, your body will let you know!
So ATM I sleep mainly on my right because that's where the baby likes to lie, or on my back for bits in the night as my hip pain wakes me up & I need to change position for a bit.
It's not like the baby is huge & squashing stuff yet.
But for later on I've read the dream genii pillow is good, best prices on eBay!0 -
Mrs_T_M, this is what the NHS have to say on the matter:
Bump-friendly sleep positions
Sleep however you feel comfortable. Lying on your back after around 16 weeks can be uncomfortable, and later on can also mean that your womb presses on one of the main blood vessels. This can make you feel faint.
Sleeping on your side might be more comfortable. You can try supporting your bump with pillows, and put a pillow between your knees. Towards the end of pregnancy, as your bump becomes heavy, you might find it more comfortable to prop yourself up with pillows so that you're almost in a sitting position. Sleeping propped up like this can sometimes help with pregnancy heartburn too.
Congrats to Kscarlett and hugs for Abis.
AFM - really need to stop looking at Amazon's daily deals, have bought baby wipes, a nappy bin & cassettes and a mattress in the last 24 hours. Good bargains but not the exam revision I'm supposed to be doing!0 -
Thank you ladies! Makes me feel far more relaxed about sleeping positions now. We figured out that the foam mattress we have been using on top of our normal mattress is the culprit for making my hips ache (even before I was pregnant) so we finally took it off our bed tonight. Sleeping on a much firmer surface tonight to see how it goes. I still really miss my 6 inch memory foam mattress topper that I have in the States. Didn't even need pillows and could sleep for 4 hours straight on that thing! 4 hours is my max due to my walnut bladder, although now I'm waking every hour and a half to use to loo!0

Vic - Thomas is absolutely beautiful. Good Luck on the next part of your journey.
Scarlet - Congratulations:beer:
Abis - Big Hugs. I hope things progress for you soon.
Good Luck to all the boldies.
afm. Still trying to get the hang of keeping my blood sugars in normal ranges. Trying to stay off medication for as long as possible but my diet is now so restrive that I am starting to worry that baby might not get enough. Have another growth scan on the 6th. Hopefully he is still growing at a normal rate. At the diabetic clinic both the nurse that took my blood and the consultant I saw said I didn't look very big for 31 weeks:(. I am hoping they are just used toseeing women with uncontrolled diabetes with giant babies.0 -
Mrs TM, believe me, when you're bigger you'll find yourself sleeping in a better position for the baby because it's more comfortable! I used to sleep on my front and struggled to change at first but now quite happy on my side.
I do sometimes roll over onto my back but it must make me breathe really loudly (I *do not* snore!
) so OH is always nudging me back onto my side!
Hope the growth scan goes well Firefly, I hope that you're right that you're actually a good size, just not huge because you've been controlling your condition!
Went to a friend's house last night and one of her friends popped round with her gorgeous 3 month old, such a smiley, sweet little girl- made me really excited about meeting my little man! I've been feeling really panicky about him actually being here recently and considering every time I see my nephew I come away feeling even worse because he's such hard work it was nice to see that chilled babies do exist!Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0 -
A bit sore after sleeping on a harder mattress last night, but that will go in a day or two hopefully.
Birdie - My DH does snore when he's on his back, and clicks when he is on his side! Whenever he snores, he typically will scare himself and roll over, but when he is facing me and clicking, I'll poke his nose to make him turn over.I do wear earplugs at night, and it's caused me to go from 30 minutes of sleep per night, to at least 6 on and off!
Stretched out the muscles in my lower back and in the back of my thighs this morning. I haven't been doing my stretches per the nurses instructions and I can really tell! I'm stiff!
I'll probably go back to just lurking here for a bit, but I know after my 12 week scan (10 December!) the time will fly and I'll be here before I can blink! :eek:0 -
Firefly are you able to speak to anyone specialist before the growth scan? whilst i can understand your reasons for not wanting to start on medication it's no failing on your part if it's needed to keep you and little one healthy, mentally as well as physically x x
Little lady seems to be all at the front at the minute, not sure if it's cos she's bigger or just where she's choosing to sit but she's getting very cumbersome lol also movements feel less like kicks but hiccups, turns and pushes. i could also swear that she's bopping her head against my pelvis on purpose. mischief already
in work today then 5 days offDH is going to paint the baby's bedroom so can't wait for it to be definitely her room - atm it's just got a few boxes left from when we moved that we haven't sorted lol
