  • I found the NHS classes awful, personally. I went to one and it was just two student midwives rushing through everything and glossing over some things. For instance they said you can't have pethadine at home, whereas I know if you get it prescribed and have it at home the midwife can administer it. It was really rushed without much structure and they repeated a lot of information and missed out some important stuff. We all just sat there watching them talk and there were no discussions or anything.
Shame, but luckily I go to NCT classes too (not very MSE!) and they are really good, v informative and structured, and really active with participation and group discussions, so I guess you get what you pay for.

Continualdiamond - I am currently reading a book on my Kindle - Ina May Gaskin Guide to Natural Childbirth and I highly recommend. Half of it is full of positive natural birth stories, and the second half details the actual birth process so you know what to expect in detail. Even though I've already given birth, I'm finding it a fascinating read.
I'd second that recommendation. It was especially useful for DH as he was feeling more negative about birth and less optimistic about the possibility of a birth going well (which isn't really good in a birth partner) and doesn't have time for lots of reading but because there were loads of birth stories he was able to just dip into it when he had a chance.
  • Hi all :)

Re: Ikea furniture- I love it! I'd never set foot in a store until pregnant with my first, DH was always against the place (he'd never been there he just went by his mums bad opinion although she's never had furniture from there before!) anyway so we popped in and were amazed at the value/ quality etc. we only bought bedding/ toys/ kitchen bits as we had already got the cot etc. I found a lovely Ikea chest of drawers/ changing unit that had been discontinued so bought second hand from eBay. It's still going strong 3 years later and will be used for our second baby :) we've also got wonderful Pax wardrobes which I love as they are the size/ colours/ customised exactly to how we wanted them. They wernt that cheap but a lot cheaper than having them specially made! My sons bed, wardrobe, table and chair are from there. All very simple to assemble and sturdy, very impressed!

Re: birth experiences I think it's a bit unfair for ladies to go into traumatic details of birth to other expectant mums unless they ask. My birth wasn't great but what happened was very rare/ unfortunate I wouldn't wish to scare/ upset others. Anyway I'm pregnant again so it's not put me off for life! All births are so different so you never know what's going to happen x

Last time I followed the RLT/ EPO etc regime, I had nothing to compare it too but I'm sure it helped me to recover afterwards. I think I took arnica too and I felt like that helped speed up healing. I took the RLT capsules though as I hated the tea to drink!

I can't decide whether to go to the Baby Show this month. I would really like to but not sure if it'll be a waste of time/ money. I should really research if the companies I wish to see will be attending x

Good luck Helen and Welsh! X

KScarlet - you can send them an email to ask if the products you want will be being exhibited.

I think I've got the start of heartburn :( but I've never had it so I'm unsure. I've just eaten some chocce biccies and now I have a weird feeling in the back of my mouth/throat that almost feels a bit like I've eaten icecream so kind of coldish, however I haven't eaten icecream or drunk anything. I first noticed it yesterday evening about 30mins after eating.

I've had heartburn/indigestion for a few months now - sometimes in the middle of the day after food and often at night when I lay down. It makes me feel really sick and is like a horrible burning feeling in the back of my throat/top of my chest and makes me produce extra saliva. Bleurghh! :(

I've tried sucking on sweets and drinking milk and that seems to help. I'm going to ask the midwife for a Gaviscon prescription at my 34 week appointment tomorrow.

Thanks Locky, that sounds a bit similar to what I'm experiencing although I wouldn't say it burns just yet. But then it only started yesterday so who knows how it'll progress :(

I have just started to get it as well. Slight burning in chest/ back of throat. Im 26 weeks now and it's just come on. Although my morning sickness has been gone for over a week now, so pleased about that. :j

I heard fruitjuice and chocolate can cause it to flare up a bit.

I get burning in my throat, starts from 30 minutes to an hour after eating. Last pregnancy I didn't really take anything for it, just drank cold liquids, ate ice pops etc. However this time I just have a Rennie's tablet whenever I need one. Got them stashed in pockets of every coat and bag and in top drawer of bedside cabinet as often need one when I lie down. I tried some Gaviscon and it made me gag- vile stuff.
Anyway they are fine to take whilst pregnant and work instantly for me. Only need to take one.

If your heartburn gets worse or normal shop bought stuff doesn't work go to your GP and ask for Omeprazole. I took some and it's like magic and lasts for ages :)

    Good luck welsh_cosmic and butler_helen :D

Got growth scan and appt with consultant (and 36 week midwife check) tomorrow. Can't wait to see baby again even though I always find the scans uncomfortable. But the main thing is just to know whether we're planning a section or waiting for labour. And if we are waiting for labour, how long will we be waiting before I have to go in for C-section. Consultant said they wouldn't induce at 20 week appt- I may have misunderstood this tho- might just not be prepared to use the drip.
