Tooth fairy, if you can sew I would make your own. Dead simple to make. They stop baby's head going through the bars

as far as I have read/heard bumpers are unsafe as soon as baby can sit up - about 6 months. before that they are there purely for decoration.

not sure about the whole protecting head thing - any experienced mums know about this? if the baby's feet are at the bottom of the cot/ cot bed then can they still bump their head?

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/10/18/health/no-bumpers-cribs-sids-parenting - sounds like quite a few medical people advise against bumpers due to risk but it's always up to parents.

I've decided not to buy a bedding set as I can see no need for a bumper apart from making companies more money. I just have blankets, sleeping bags and fitted sheets.

I heard the same re no bumpers for little babies as their heads can get overheated if up against them when sleeping and is a cause of SIDS.
We got some nice baby sleeping bags in baby gap sale but they are quite thick tog so will have to see if we have a hot or a cold one!
  • I got one bought for me as a shower pressie for £23 from argos it's winnie the pooh but it's now £30. Then I got a little bird one from mothercare sale for £12 but it's sold out. Finally I got one in a secondhand bundle - cream neutral. Mine are 2.5 tog cos I'm having a winter baby. I love the 'little bird' range from mothercare but can't bring myself to pay £50 for a coverlet but thinking of paying £20 for the fitted cotbed sheets ...

nursery bedding can be so cute! I like the Olive & Henri range from toys r us but that comes with a bumper and is pretty expensive. Grobags have a lovely range of sleeping bags too.
  • Hello, we got bumpers, and they don't fit nicely around the edges of the crib and look pretty like they do in the shops. I hate mine because I have to tuck them under the mattress to stop my lo putting his hand on the outside and pulling the bumper to his face like he's trying to smother himself.

We bought just a side bumper which was good, just because his head was going flat on one side so it meant he looked the other way for once.

    :)

The advice is lots of layers of differing togs or weights - so sheets, blankets (single layers- if doubled then double the tog). After the first few hours baby can regulate own heat so it is likely that if you are hot or cold then baby is the same if dressed similarly. Bumpers are not recommended nor are duvets or quilts as baby can easily wriggle under them.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I agree with this. I did a lot of research first and concluded they were a total waste of money BUT finding bed sets without them is not easy. In fact in the end I went with cellular blankets and sheets (for the most part) because buying sheets for a reasonable price was so difficult.

I've founded a lot of baby bedding/room decor to be unimaginative so decided to go with plain things in the end. There are some lovely sleeping bags around but again, they can be expensive and baby would need a few to allow for different temps and any mess they might make.

I spent a lot of time researching bedding and trying to find really nice pieces. I wish I could make my own! :D

Ooh shows what marketing does then, I thought they were for safety. My child will not be having a bumper in that case, thanks everyone :)

I thought that too being my first baby :o. I only actually researched it because a friend told me they were pointless and then I discovered they had been deemed as a risk by some professionals. It really does show the power of marketing - selling sets with them included as if they are a total necessity doesn't help.

It doesn't take much to worry me though when it comes to baby. I haven't even bought a mobile in case it came lose or parts detached and fell on him! One can get too hung up..as in my case!
