NoAngel: Your patience levels are far higher than mine because if my OH played the X Box all of the time, I would chop the plug off! I can't stand those things. In my eyes, household chores and raising baby is a joint responsibility unless, of course, one of you are ill or physically unable to do your joint share.

Claree - hope you're out of hospital and home safe and sound.

I have to admit that DH actually did all the night feeds! He loved having that time alone with the girls and will still say how much he misses them (he discovered one of the channels was showing reruns of old Dr Who episodes and he just sat feeding and cuddling! For some odd reason both my girls love Dr Who now!!!)

Our girls are away to stay with my in laws tonight so I'm going to indulge DH geeky side and have booked tickets for us to go see 'The Worlds End'. Think it'll be our last night out for a while!

    6 days to induction.

It was advertised as part of joining Amazon family. It comes off automatically at the checkout - add the cabriofix to your basket and see if it works when you go to the checkout page.

Having said that, do you have an iphone? If you do, download the Mothercare App and they send you a code for £10 off a £50 spend. 5% quidco onto makes it a better deal than Amazon :)

Cabriofix is a great seat. Buy it (very MSE) then plan your travel system around it!

Edit: Just tried the mothercare method. £58.84 delivered, plus quidco/tcb on top :)

    Bargain! Thanks
  • darn it would have used the mothercare £10 if I'd known, never mind. I still have car base and cot bed to buy yet and maybe monitor.

MW told me I couldn't express milk until 6 weeks until I'm established and baby is used to bfing. So that's definitely me getting up through the night for 6 weeks! I'm going to try to express after the 6 weeks so I get more of a break.

My OH isn't exactly well domesticated but with a bit of nagging will tend to do as he's asked. He has helped me with night feeds with both ours even though I was breast feeding, if you have a section it's quite difficult to get out of bed and pick baby up in those first couple of weeks. After a feed he would wind them. I find its good to get them to do things like that if you're breast feeding as it makes them feel included in the feeding process.

Rubbish advice from midwife IMO. You can start expressing as soon as your milk comes in. And neither of mine have had any problems differentiating between boob and bottle. Midwives/health visitors can be useful for some information but when it comes to feeding baby Mums usually know what works for them!

To be fair though it is night time when your hormones are most active for stimulating milk production so I did tend to bf at night to make sure I had a good supply. I did notice I had a better milk supply with DS1 who woke more often in the night than with DS2.

My midwives told me not to express first time ( pretty obvs) but after that no reason not to. This is the thing ... even when it comes to midwives the advice can be a bit ropey sometimes :)

It is advised NOT to express until baby is 6 weeks old as it can cause confusion breast/bottle but.. it isn't a law and you do what is best for you.

You also NEED to feed through the night as the prolactin which is the hormone which stimulates milk supply is most plentiful at this time (it is also this hormone which suppresses ovulation ;) ) and this is also why babies having a growth spurt wake during the night.

TBH.. 6 weeks of breastfeeding you'll be very lucky if the baby will take a bottle anyway. I found feeding the baby then expressing or expressing from one breast while feeding from the other in a morning gave a plentiful supply for later in the day.. cluster feeding times usually coincide with trying to get your own dinner so it is an excellent time for OH to feed the bottle.

At the end if the day each baby is different, just like every person is different and what suits one won't suit another. When you have your baby you quickly get to know what suits and what doesn't.

As long as you follow the key safety advice baby will let you know if something's working or not.

It's my experience that HV and midwives are too pushy when it comes to breast feeding exclusively, and discourage anything to do with a bottle, even if its expressing. I think if they were more supportive of mothers who wanted to mix both more people would continue for longer. Breast feeding simply doesn't work for everyone and new mums are under enough pressure as it is.
  • it does feel like a lot of pressure really - it means that I'm pretty much responsible for all baby care for six weeks. I was hoping to express ASAP so I could have more of a break for my sanity. I don't fancy getting up every 2 hours 24/7 for 6 weeks - although it depends on baby and how I feel after having baby.
