your mistake wasn't making the recovery discs, it was attempting a factory restore and turning the machine off in the middle. There was probably nothing wrong with the machine, if you'd have left it to complete, you would probably be working now, as would your old one (if an i5 is old) if you'd have backed up as suggested long ago and bought a £40 disk and a hinge.

you have an external hard disk for backup already don't you?

I have a Clickfree backup hard disc drive but I don't know if it is compatable with windows 8. I brought it the same time as the broken laptop so 3 or 4 years ago. If that one was repaired I could just plug in the click free & put everything back on it, so it claims but have never had to do it. You can put multiple computers on it I just can't find if it works with windows 8 or not

I acept that I killed it, but it was also throwing blue screens at me & not loading websites properly that's why I did not contact Samsung & sort my breaking the laptop out because the other faults should not of been there on a brand new laptop

I don't think it helped that immediately started uninstalling software and installing other stuff when the first thing you should have done is make the recovery discs and do the backup as it seems you had a disk available.

As the keyboard colour is of importance to you - if you can get out of the house why not visit a local independent shop (eg not PC World)and see what they have available refurbished or new. Then maybe they could supply it with the recovery disks.

The very first thing you should do is install security. I did not want Norton so I got rid of it & downloaded the free security I wanted. then I had to wait a few days because I did not have any discs that would work to do the backup/recovery discs.

I did go to PCworld & that is when I realised I could not see the black keys on a black background well.

Though I did not ask them about recovery discs

    1) Norton would have been fine for a few days

    2) You mentioned youalready had the Clickfree disk ?

    3) I suggested you go somewhere other than Pcworld. That way you will get a more personal service (e.g haggling to get recovery disks included, warranty etc) and you can also take a real look at what suits your needs (rather than looking on internet).

I'm curious what are you using on now ? ( I can't remember if your old laptop completely broke).

Ok it is now between three:

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_K55A-SX376H_red_1337331.html

    Good points:

One of the best brands for reliability & customer satisfaction
    Glossy Screen
    DVD player
    i5 Core

Bad points Black keys on black key board

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_V5-571G_1289811.html

    Good points

    Silver background for the keys
    Back lit keyboard
    Glossy Screen
    DVD Player
    i3 Core

    Bad points

Its a Acer reviewed as one of the worst for reliability & customer satisfaction
i3 core (put this here even though i3 core is not a negative it is lower than the i5 core in the first laptop)

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009R1660Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

    Good Points

    Glossy Screen
    DVD player
    Back lit keyboard
    i5 Core

    Bad points

Acer one of the worst for reliability & customer satisfaction
Black keys on black key board (though they are back lit)

That's where I am at the moment

it's still a disk, and unless you have an imaging version, the software is not as useful as macrium when a hard disk fails.

The security software you added to the machine could be the cause of blue screens, and java issues could probably have been resolved easily.

not sure what you are expecting people to add regarding choice of machine, in the space of a few days, you've gone through 90% of the market, including a chromebook.
