Why own a dog if you aren't going to walk it?

I have a bulldog who doesn't like walks he will do the odd little trot, maybe 200 yards at most and after that he will drag to go home unless he still hasn't had a poo. He is a very lazy (and stupid) dog if you don't literally drag him out in the morning before work he will happily lay in his basket until dinner time without having a wee or a poo. He doesn't bark as much here, but as we live in a flat he doesn't see as many people walking by to bark at like he used to when we had a house.
Yes dogs bark, but it is normally quite clear when a dog is barking because its bored/unhappy. Its good that the issue has been investigated but seems to have inadvertently made the situation worse for the dog. But maybe if the dog is now inside all day it might annoy her enough for her to get rid of it.
Owner has mentioned a few times that she is going to get rid of the dog as she is sick of the barking. The barking can be resolved by more walks, playtime and less time alone but I know owner well and I know there is more chance of seeing a flying pig than seeing her walk the dog. She had a dog before this one that never got walked all its life. The dog lost all its fur, was depressed and went senile. I was hopin she wouldn't get another but she did. She wanted one of mine when I got them as pups (both from same litter) and I refused because I knew it would have no life and never get walked. I was a bit upset when she got one a few months later so I helped out for the first 6 months and couldn't help no more as I explained in a previous post.
It did cross my mind that the dog would probably be annoying her more in the house and she would hopefully get rid of it so fingers crossed as that dog deserves a much better life than it's got. I have heard a dog barking all day in the house but can't be sure it was hers, I hope it was then she will hopefully rehome.
After owner got a visit this morning she called on all the neighbours to ask who had reported her. I think she's pointing fingers but it could be anyone as I can hear the dog from about 5 streets away so it's not necessarily someone living next door/couple doors away.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
I do hope you are right.Even if it ends up in kennels waiting to be rehomed it has to be better than being shut in the house all day on it's own.At least it would get a walk and have things to see.
Why do so many people treat animals like stuffed toys ? That is all she deserves, horrible woman.0 -

It's really sad isn't it. The barking upsets me more than it annoys me as I know the dogs bored and unhappy. But I won't be taken advantage of again. Hopefully the dog will annoy her more in the house now so a greater possibility of the dog being rehomed, another reason why I refuse to help look after, train and walk the dog.
I was talking to another neighbour yesterday who is good friends with owner and she said 'whoever reported the dog has a very sad life and in for a shock as nothing can be done about a dog barking'. I said any owner can be fined for a dog barking constantly causing a nuisance but she disagrees. Mrs curtain twitcher that thinks she's above the law and knows it all. She also said 'I would love to see someone try report mine ( which is stranger/dog aggressive) as its been here a lot longer than some people around here, very childish for a 60 year old woman! This is also a woman who reports everyone for any little thing. I was going to say everyone has different lives and quite a few around here work nightshift, I respect my neighbours and if my dog was barking for more than a minute I would distract them or call them inside.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
It really upsets me to think of any dog shut up in a house,or worse still a shed or the back garden and never getting any stimulation from a walk.A dog's greatest pleasure(apart from food!) is going out, running free and meeting other dogs and smelling and seeing new things.
Imagine if we were shut up in a house or yard all the time or at best had a walk round the garden twice a day.It is no way to live for such an intelligent, loving and faithful animal.
Like the title of this post says. Why bother to get a dog if you are not going to walk it ? There are some truly lazy and selfish people around.
One of mine LOVES activity. He's gogogo, all day. He's young and my problem is not Letting him be OVER stimulated for his age.
Often one of the other two here's the word 'walk' raises one ear while she mulls it over and then decides 'sofa' is a better choice, Most of the time I give her no choice, other times I let her stay ' home alone'.
The one thing my older two like more thank walk is a car drive:o. Mention that to them and they are up like a shot. Take them to walk some where in the car and its ok ....
They do get minimum two walks a day regardless (plus a pretty outdoor life with social stimulation and meeting other dogs fairly regularly) but the walks are mainly at home these days, on our own land, and this is not AS simulating as regularly meeting new dogs and going to new places IMO.
My eldest would gladly live with someone whose longest daily walk was to the fridge of the biscuit cupboard despite being regularly exercised here.0 -
I know of someone who did this. The poor dog went stir crazy and started attacking people when they touched him.
Exact same situation with a dog I had to rescue. He now lives with other dogs on a large property with lots of land. Keep meaning to try and get hold of the owners details as would like to know how he is getting on.
The woman mentioned in the OP needs a visit from the RSPCA imo, but no doubt they'll say 'if it's got food, water, shelter there's nothing we can do'...or some other usual spiel which I swear was supposed to be sorted out with the AWA amendments years ago!
I do hope the woman doesn't try to breed the poor girl.0 -
This has got totally out of hand. Me and owner have just had a huge argument in the street about the dog barking report to HA. She has been too scared to confront me bearing in mind she has passed me several times. She has waited until today when she is at the nosy neighbours house which is right out my back. Two drunken women in the 50s and 60s shouting insults and threats as they seen my bathroom light on and window open. I tried for 15 minutes to ignore it but decided to calmy go to the bedroom window and say if you have a problem can you come to my door in ten minutes.
They wouldn't give up and started braying on my door even letting themselves inside. I didn't have a chance to call police as I thought I would record (on my phone) all the insults and threats of violence so the police would know the truth of what has gone on. I have been accused of all sorts. These are two neighbours that I speak to and help each other out. They first pointed their fingers at my immediate neighbour they decided to point the finger at me.
I really can't believe the way they went on tonight, very immature. The whole street were at the windows and not one phoned the police so the disturbance went on for hours.
Many things were said, not just about the barking dogs, false accusations, parking wars etc but I will keep this on topic
Owner had housing officer out regarding her dog barking and I am getting the blame now as you know. She said in argument tonight that she has told the HO that my dogs bark too so he has passed the complaint to the council since I own my home it is a council matter not HA. Apparently everyone who has dogs is now going to be inspected and see what is causing the dogs to bark.
But what upset me tonight was the comments they made about my dogs being buried in my garden. They said they are going to dig them up as it is illegal. I am so upset. This is just one of many hurtful things they said but as it is a pet forum I will keep on topic. I own my house outright, no mortgage. I was told when my dogs died that I do not have to have permission to bury my dogs in my own garden as I own the property. Is this true? As they think otherwise and are going to report me.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
That is dreadful, what a horrible woman. After all you have done for her! The police should definitely be informed, that is just sheer bullying, gang style, and you should not have to put up with that.
Lots of people i know have their dogs and other pets buried in their garden. My 2 are,i couldn't bear to leave them elsewhere or turned to ashes.Heck,my Mum in her old house had 12 goats buried in hers! So absolutely NO worries on that score. She is talking complete rubbish.
Anyway so what if you did complain! You would have been in the right, her dog is a nuisance though of course it is the poor dog suffering as much as anyone for being cooped up.She could have avoided the whole thing by getting up off her a**e or not having the dog in the first place!

Housing association tenants live up to their expectations. Again.
OP you've seen their true colours. Scum.Pants0 -
I'm not sure whether to inform police now, although maybe I should as they have threatened violence on me and said to watch when I am out. They are in their late 50s and 60s so should have been more mature about the situation. They dragged a lot of neighbours in to this last night to try get them turn against me making false accusations saying I have said things about them. Definitely seen their true colours tonight. I'm still in shock at what they've said that I have sat up with tears in my eyes and shaking me head in disbelief all night.
I think it would be a good idea to contact the HA and mention that the dog owner had a report about her dog and has come around my home threatening me. Other neighbours that were almost dragged into it wouldn't get involved so there is no one else to back this up but hopefully it will be logged on file when I make a complaint. I know she is working full time and getting a lot of help towards her HB, nothing to do with me but after the things she said she is going to look in to about me and report me for 2 buried dogs, I think I should do the same. I feel stalked and harassed which is a police matter but not sure if I should involve them. They both know so much about everyone around here as they are always at the window and report everyone for every little thing. They are just so bored, sad and lonely without a man in their lives which is driving them to this.
The electric man has just been to read my meter. My dogs were indoors so no problem. He then went to the nosy neighbours house and her dog was barking mad, he shouted over I can't come in there with a dog. She said well you haven't got a dog. She wasn't just trying to be funny with a bit sense of humour it was said in awful manner as she is very sharp. He said no your dog, I can't come in there until you lock the dog up. She was very unwilling to at first but eventually did as asked. She then said has there been some complaints is that why you can't come in as there's been trouble around here and people are reporting dogs (paranoia). Even I knew it was for health and safety. He said border collies (that she has) are the top ones for attacking his colleagues as they are a working dog. Hers does sound vicious whenever anyone passes or goes to her fence so can understand why they are wary of it.
Back to the owner who I mentioned in my OP, in argument last night I finally got out what I wanted to say which was 'at least my dogs get walked'. Her reply 'so'. I said your too lazy to walk down to shops for your tabs everyday that you send the neighbours so what chance has your dog got of ever being walked. It's off my chest now but poor dog will still never get walked so I think I might take it up with the RSPCA, are they likely to do anything?A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
Hi, sorry to hear this stupid lazy woman has upset you. Do you think it was drink making her mouth off? If so she may not do or say anything more.
I am pretty sure you can bury a pet animal in your garden so even if she does try to make trouble about this she will get nowhere.
Sadly from my experience, the RSPCA are pretty useless and certainly will not be interested if the dog has food, water and shelter. I have reported cases of cruelty to them which they have not been interested in.
I wouldn't personally get on to the HA just yet but if she does say or do anything else then I would think about it. She is angry even though she has no right to be and a few days may see her calm down.
I know also it is upsetting you that she doesn't walk her dog and, although I think that is wrong and awful for the dog, it could be worse as she is not abusing it. There are a couple of dogs near me that very rarely get walked and it does upset me but if there is nothing I can do I just try not to think about them too much. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0
