Why don't YOU complain? It seems you feel strongly enough about it to do so.

Some dogs don't need walking, the foster I'm being assessed for at the moment (checking I'm suitable for her) will very probably be homes somewhere with a garden so she doesn't need walks due to the way she is. Not saying this is true of the dog in this thread, just a general FYI ;)

Just out of interest why does this dog not need walking? Even with acres of garden to run in a dog surely should be walked?

Which dogs don't need walking? I have little dogs and a garden the size of a football pitch but my dogs still need daily walks.

I am not sure the RSPCA or even Council would do anything about the dog as it has a roof over it's head and is fed and watered, if a few neighbours complained about the barking then maybe so but as we are all friendly with each other in our street I can only see this happeing if someone from the next street over is as fed up of the barking as I am. However, owner is at work between 2 and 5 days a week so the dog is shut inside therefore it is only a nuisance in the garden from around 5pm until 9pm and usually all day on her days off since she does not go out.

I also don't think I could report this neigbour as she is someone I speak to everytime I see her passing so it is a bit difficult. I have tried to help her train the dog and stop the barking but she is just not interested/can't be bothered.

    I agree.

Letting the dog out in the garden/yard does not substitute for a walk. Dogs need to be exercised properly and socialised. If a dog doesn't go for walks it becomes a nuisance in the house and garden like this one is doing, it needs mental stimulation.
A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.

I had a rescue pup that I was told not to walk when it was wet, due to hip displacia (sp). So could only go round the garden on a tight leash on concrete. Being a daft alsation/collie cross, you can imagine how demented he was. Even taking him on a walk on leash on concrete paths, he was still slipping all over the place :/

But I agree on reporting them. But can understand why you don't to. I'm concerned with the dog next door too, who rarely gets walked. Escapes every time the gate is opened. Left alone with kids in the garden. He's a lovely dog, but think it's only a matter of time before he turns. One of the kids punches hell out of him, the others pull his tail. I have reported it to the SSPCA, but they still have him.

Unless there's a medical reason for not walking, every dog should be walked.

There is no one breed of dog that doesn't need walks, it an individual dog thing. Some dogs, due to their past, just don't need to be walked. I can't go into detail, as its not my place to, but this dog will quite likely not get walked when rehomed, if she gets somewhere with a big garden (of course if her new owner chooses to walk her too, they can she just doesn't NEED it), Garden play (which she loves) will be enough for her.
Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!

It makes me really cross the amount of people I see walking their dogs in the blazing hot sun we have here once in a blue moon. They don't seem to understand that its bloody hard work with a fur coat on.

One of mine doesn't get walked for weeks at a time, literally nearly 6 weeks he didn't go out for in March/April but its because of a health condition. He is very good and copes really well with mental stimulation instead of walks, although he does still prefer walks. My neighbours probably think I'm a right lazy dog owner if any of them do neighbourhood spying, but there is a really solid reason why one of them is houseridden at times.

Our next door neighbour has 2 dogs...a westie and a boxer. The westie never gets walked and the boxer very rarely and you wonder why the boxer has destroyed the inside of their house!

I have a six year old Cairn terrier and she has been spayed. She gets walked 3 to 4 times a day and she used to bark at most things that went past the front window. We have cured her barking by the use of a "spray" collar. This stopped her barking straight away. We take it off when we take her out for walk and at night time. I am not saying that everyone should use one but for us it has been priceless.

If you PM me enough details to identify her I'd be happy to do it, plus I could always get another trusted soul to do the same.
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
  • My next door neighbour has a dog two, working breed and she does not walk it either. She is now pregnant with her 4th child. We have a feeling that she will just sell the dog soon. All her dog does is bark and howl all day.

I walk mine for 3 hours every other day.

It really upsets me to think of any dog shut up in a house,or worse still a shed or the back garden and never getting any stimulation from a walk.A dog's greatest pleasure(apart from food!) is going out, running free and meeting other dogs and smelling and seeing new things.

Imagine if we were shut up in a house or yard all the time or at best had a walk round the garden twice a day.It is no way to live for such an intelligent, loving and faithful animal.

Like the title of this post says. Why bother to get a dog if you are not going to walk it ? There are some truly lazy and selfish people around.
