  • Yea, but its only £130 - in budget
And also, for a first time user who won't be interest in expansion slots etc.

When you're done with it then sure - move on to bigger and better - but for first timer, learning the basics etc.

I've just looked at the storage on my Kindle Fire HD.

1.8 GB books - this is more than a 1000 lots with fancy colour pictures and stuff. You can remove the ones you don't need to the Cloud.

1.4 GB music- I estimate this is about 40 hours of stuff

5.4 gb Films (in MP4 format but you can also use a Lovefilm account to stream where there's wifi). This is c30 90 minute films.

Plus a GB of assorted apps, photos etc.

Obviously with an 8gb Kindle/Nexus, you'd only get half that but presumably you could maanage with only 10 or so films if you were away for a week (remembering that you can use streaming services if you have a decent wifi connection).

And with a KIndle or a Nexus you can certainly surf, read email, etc. Don't think that a Kindle is tied into Amazon for ebooks - you can also download from free sites like ManyBooks or Project Gutenberg. And you can use Calibre to convert books to Kindle format.

Just thought it might be helpful to show what a tablet in iyour budget could store.

But what does it do that the Acer (at potentially £69) doesn't do?

I have no idea. I'm not particularly trying to sell a Kindle. Since the OP mentioned films and music I though he/she might want to know how much could be stored on one. A Kindle Fire is pretty easy to use though if that's a factor.

Your always the one telling us you we don't need so much power/specification? ;)

I know that you are trying to be funny, ;) but nothing I recommend would have such a poor specification.

With a laptop and PC, you can expand the RAM easily. How do you propose to do so with a tablet?
I would rather have lesser on-board storage than too little RAM.

It might be fine with 512MB RAM. I'm just suggesting possible avenues of investigation. The OP should expect nothing less from a Tech advisory forum.

Damn... I was going to suggest a Compaq Ipaq but you have blown that out the water :rotfl:

But seriously I don't think 512MB impedes Android so badly, 256MB oh yes sir, but since ICS memory management has come on lots and I have several devices with only 512MB around. Personally I am more interested in the graphics sub processor seeming to really make the difference to the experience.

My son can't be peeled off his tablet at the moment since he got into Minecraft which runs perfectly quickly and smoothly on a 512MB Ram, single core (1.2GHz) dual 400Mhz video core android 4 tablet.

Not really into Tablets myself. Have a PlayBook sitting at home that I haven't used yet.

    I have one of these - http://www.ebuyer.com/432600-sumvision-cyclone-voyager-tablet-pc-cycvoy101bt
It's at the top end of the op's budget but it does everything I require and no doubt her o.h. too. Good build quality, very good capacitive display. Ideal if a slightly larger screen is needed.

    decision made, going for this

seems simple to navigate round and has the option to expand storage with SD slot

  • Hope he enjoys it! If he's not got one already, he'll need to get a Google account (e.g. a gmail email address)
