thinking of getting my OH a tablet for his birthday. he isnt very tech minded so want something simple.
uses, internet, music, movies, possibly an e-reader and some good apps.
budget around £100 if possible. a good entry level tablet that is simple to use for a 1st timer.
also, when at home can it be connected to our virgin media internet? sorry if that is a very daft question.

Yes it will connect to your home internet, and other wifi hotspots when he is out and about. If you want 3 G connectivity you'll have to up the budget.

I would not bother with cheap tat myself, get him a Nexus 7, I assume a 7 inch screen is good enough?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

But op doesn't say wants to spend £160 for a 16gb with no card slot to expand it. Might as well suggest an ipad mini for £270 or a ...whatever.

Why not make a suggestion yourself rather than just criticising?

Any tablet that runs Android 4.0 (ICS) or later, and that meets your needs regarding screen size, resolution, and touch sensitivity.

I got my wife (a self-confessed technophobe) a Nexus 7 for last Christmas - she loves it. :)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab2 7" has come down in price and can be found for around £120 if not less. WiFi only at this price.

It has an sd card slot which allows you to expand storage plus front and rear camera.

    Wouldn't be without mine now

The one above available here with a £20 off cashback offer so £79 (until 30th June) Its fairly decent at £79, screen is better but only dual processor and half the memory and storage of the one below...

Op.. a good place to start is the Sumvision Cyclone - very popular tablet, Plus features are good computer power (Quad processors), good memory and storage so will be decent at generating busy web pages and such. Minus features - Display quality is only 'medium' and battery life is a bit short maybe limiting use as an book reader to a couple of hours per charge. Good value at £80

Tablets are incredibly price sensitive, a few pounds make a lot of difference, this one would be my suggestion at £110. Bigger 9" screen easier for the uses you mention, only dual processor but running faster than many, plenty of memory (1GB) and storage (16GB) so you probably won't need to buy a memory card for it in any hurry. Also has things like HDMI out so you can connect it to a TV and use it as a video player. Only minus is screen resolution is only 'medium' but acceptable for this size device.

Forgot to mention... any tablet should connect to your wifi, you just need to know your 'password' to put into the tablet.

As to one being easy to use, apart from a few exceptions, most tablets (that are not Apple) are all running on the Google Android system so largely any one is as easy or hard to use as the next whether its a little known brand or a well known brand. And all of them (including Apple ones) are made in sweatshop factories in China or Korea.

    Hi Madlyn,

I think people are just trying to help you avoid a costly mistake - a false economy isn't very money-saving either! The cheaper tablets can give you a very disappointing experience, and so you may find yourself less likely to use them, and so they go in a drawer.

I'm not saying all cheapo no-brand tablets are rubbish, but Google pretty much subsidise the Nexus 7 mentioned above, so the experience is decent and similar to a much higher priced unit.
