I think you will find the galaxy tab 2 does take a sd card.

I stand corrected :), I was thinking only the newer one (Plus?) did as its rarely mentioned in the specs but yes it does appear that the regular (£149) one does too. Thanks. So its up to the op really on how much they want to spend as the decider.

I been using this forum since 2012, therefore where did you get the idea of me being a 'spammer in the making'. I usually intent to post in two section of this forum, so hardly a spammer. The operating system is what determines whether a device is worth spending money on. Why do you think apple and Samsung are successful? because they have the right operating system which support vast level of resources. If the owner of the thread wants a quality product then follow on from what I have said previously. But if I am wrong then pick up a cheap YeahPad or Hipad from ebay.

Fine if your not a spammer fair enough. But I still have NO IDEA what your on about.

That poster uses the word "intent" when he means "tend". This can make some of what he says confusing.

I don't mind devices without memory card slots as much as sillygoose does - I figure there aren't that many occasions when I'm going to need all my DVD's with me without access to a computer to transfer the ones I do want, or otherwise use a cloud service. Horses for courses, there is no single right answer ;-)

Agree and sort of disagree in the context of the op. Yes there are cloud options and if you can use a transcoding software to get the size of a movie down then yes you can carry many hours of entertainment in a few GB.

But as this thread was about technophobia my thinking was keep it simple so non of the above! there are plenty of programs around that will rip a DVD to MPEG2 but the files will be big.

I keep my music on a USB stick plugs in my car, 8GB seemed enough, then it had to go to 16GB - I just had to change it to 32GB stick
Memory never gets bigger by itself but data has a habit of doing so.

I see but its more the case that we are talking about £100 budget tablet, IOS is therefore irrelevent, the budget makes the choice Android by default. The only discussion needed is how to help the op get the best for the budget.

let me make it clear. MY BUDGET IS £130 AT A PUSH.
want to surf the net, as an e-reader load music and films so he can use it away from home make use of the many apps available, you know the sort of thing i mean.
i'm asking for advice because i want to get my OH the right tablet for his level of knowledge.
other wise i would have bought a bit of tat of ebay for a few quid, that wont last 5 mins.
i understand that there is a vast aray of tablets out there, but price dictates my purchase.

Select tablet which support IOS or android operating system

Irrelevent really, poster wants to spend £100, there are no £100 Apple products so it has to be Android, no 'select' about it.

A iPad or Samsung are currently good choices to consider.

Again both Apple and Samsung devices are over well £100 (although the poster is considering the stretch in budget to a Samsung Note)

Cheaper tablets intend to be less fluid

Nope, pretty much the same hardware and software as branded tablets.

Cheaper tablets intend to be less fluid and have interface similar to a navigation system. :money:

?? Cheaper tablets have an interface of plain Android, its the branded ones that usually feel the need to put their own interfaces on. I prefer pure Android! I own many Navigation systems, none of them look anything like Android interface to me.

you can buy Chinese imported tablets from eBay for less than £50, they can do everything you have outlined above, however they are locked. if you want a quality product which will last years then research on devices running 4.2 Jelly Bean (Android) and IOS (apple). There are many apps and support available online for devices running both operating systems. If your budget is £130 then Amazon Kindle Fire or Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7 inch) is a good choice, but consider the opinion of others before taking a decision.
