CTC, plasterboard is £2.50 a bag here. At my DD1's it's free.
DD1 is here for the weekend, but somehow I don't think she'll be going home in a big van!
There are plenty of anomalies like that. Where we lived before, I was always popping into lir's county to look after my Dad, and as their [STRIKE]tips[/STRIKE] recycling centres were much friendlier, I'd take my van and rubbish with me.
Refuse tourism. :rotfl:
On the subject of farm gate sales, we realise that once this renovation's done, there will be no more money on tap, so a small income stream will become important.
At present, we have no really prominent selling place, except the road verge, which isn't ideal or legal. We can, however, alter the hedges and walls, so we'll do that, but you can bet it won't be without protest from a few nearby residents. We will be 'lowering the tone,' I expect.0 -
morning all,
So does that mean you will be upping your game with potential gate sales next year Davesnave??
do you put a donation box, or do you put a price on things??
I had a good crop with the mingy too's that you gave me Davesnave, and I have a HUGE amount of saved seeds for next year...Work to live= not live to work0 -

I gave you mingy too's!!!????
Sorry about that.Must've been a bad batch.
We price things and put some together in bags, like the apples.
I'd love to think we'd be finished with the house next year, but being realistic, it will be 2016 before we are fully 'done.'0 -
hahaha yes my mingy too's ( mange touts) done really well, they were a pretty plant too, when Alfie was here, we thought they were sweet peas lol...
going to put those raise bed things that I bought in the auction in place over the next week or two, and before I add any soil, I am going to add a lot of pig poo, quail poo, soiled straw to compost down over the winter, and then add the top soil.. so hopefully I should get an even better crop of peas, beans and mingy's next year..
was thinking of quick crops too, like radishes, but don't know if they would sell?? as they are so easy to grow, and you can grow them anywhere..Work to live= not live to work0 -
COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »Alex... I would get rid of the chicks asap, as no one wants male chickens at the best of times, let alone going into winter, the thing is Pekins and sablepoot are not suitable for eating...
what is happening with you these days?? any news of you moving??
Wise words, definitely. I'd like to wait a little longer - c0ckerels aren't a problem here, it's not like there aren't any (next door but one has two!) but they'll get moved up to the top of the garden when they are older. Their plumage keeps changing and I want to know what they end up as colour-wise, to see if they fit into the future of the flock. I don't object to feeding them through the winter and I don't really expect them to start crowing before the New Year... fingers crossed :rotfl:
No news currently on moving, I've just had two weeks off work to have a little time in the sun for DH. I'm back to work on Monday for two weeks, then another week off but I just expect it to be at home. Then it's head down and nose to the grindstone until Christmas. I don't know what we're doing next, we could swap this house for somewhere with land, but right now it won't meet the requirements and will leave us in the countryside with no income. Not a clever move..."...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -
oooo right Alex, I am a bit confused now, didn't you look at some houses with land, and were only hours away from emigrating to spain???
cant you sort of start from scratch.. like today is the first day of the daydream fund, and get a money saving tin, and start putting some pennies into it? as that is how I started... it can be done Alex it might take umpteen years lol... even if, you cant buy a smallholding. as Davesnave said a house with a large plot/garden can be just as productive or even more, than somewhere with acres... unless you want more than chickens.
think of the max amount of travelling time you would do, to go back and fore to work... and see what is in that area, so it will give you a rough guide of what the prices are, then look at what has sold in those areas at auction..
Its only you stopping you getting your dream... ok it might take ages, but it can be done one way for another lol..Work to live= not live to work0 -
CTC Radishes are super easy to grow but people don't always know that
Why not plant a few and see if they sell. See what is expensive to buy in the shops and replicate that where possible. Where I am rhubarb is  expensive and we are the only people we know with it growing so we become popular in the spring :rotfl: Things like that and soft fruit are easy to grow and require little to know attention.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Rummer, dont think I would be able to grow enough soft fruit to have any surplus, Rhuburb I still have loads of plants still in pots after the big split this year...
I think next year will be a little surplus of everything, and see what happens...
cant remember if I mentioned it ( prob did) I bought some bluebell and snowdrop bulbs, going to plant them under the trees along the shady part of the footpath, I am hoping by putting a corridor of spring bulbs along there, people might slowly respect that area...
Must admit, people are now SLOWLY coming round to respecting the land is owned by someone.. only 2 plus years ... still a long way to go, as we still get the odd twonk...Work to live= not live to work0 -
Developments on the Draingate front.
Drain man, who I'll call Mr Rod, arrived with his digger before 9am. He dug a big hole, broke into the pipe where it enters the field and went to work.
He managed to rod the pipe all the way across the field. He also managed to get many rods up the pipe towards the house. We were able to follow his progress by listening, mapping the route along the way. Very useful. It pretty much confirmed what we'd worked-out by observation.
All the above is good news.
We got as far as the garden. As expected, the blockage is under there.:( Next step is to remove enough plants for him to dig down there tomorrow.......
Good job it's autumn!0 -

We still had people letting their dogs carp on the grass verge that I mow and strim, until we removed the fence and put a low hedge in about 18 months ago.
Now they know we can see them, they behave. :A0
