How many times a year do you travel to London LIR??
as if its only a few times a year, is it worth buying a car than will suit your everyday running around etc, and then hire a car for those trips to London?? I know it might seem a waste of money hirng a car for those trips, BUT.. that way it is solving all the dif situations/problems ..Work to live= not live to work0 -

ATM none
Partly because I am tired and don't trust the car though.
I'd like to be going up monthly. Hiring a car makes it a bit of a palaver too far tbh, where as just getting in and going more feasible.
I have to consider how I'll feel next day and ability to return hire car etc you see.0 -
didn't think of that LIRWork to live= not live to work0

. No reason you should.
Its why car is easier than train too, which is silly. Train is 'easier' but coping with tube to get to train , then the stairs at the end over to car park can leave me tuckered out after a full day.
The actual train bit of the journey is no doubt better, its the beginnings and ends of it.( plus the inflexibility)
I'm almost certainly going to have to hand back my licence in next few years anyway, so really ought to try and make the most of it while I can I suppose. Which returns us to plan a, from which we were wavering, that we should remain a one car couple, as no point have a second car no one EVER drives if I hand in licence sooner rather than later.0 -
Sounds like you need a 'plastic' 4x4 lir, like a Honda CRV, a Toyota Rav4 or a Nissan X-Trail.
Not doing things quickly is often a good thing, CTC. We have probably lopped £40k off the cost of what we are doing here. That's £40k we most likely wouldn't have had!:rotfl:

CTC, a lot of the later cooking and multi-purpose apples aren't ready yet, and won't be for a few more weeks. There are also eaters, like russets and similar, which I'm leaving alone for now.
The show went OK. I was worried that few would bother, as I'd heard entries were well down, but people did as they often do and left it all to the last minute. :T
DW enters all our stuff, so she picks up all the prizes. This year, she received the cup given to the person with the most horticultural points.
I did not go to the local show as they could not get it together to send me a schedule and it clashed with the specialist regional event. Bit of a challenge getting there but it was in danger of being abolished permanently.
Mainly went as a make-weight with the vague hope of a third in a novice class. Got two seconds mainly due to being better at matching smaller unblemished offerings than having exceptional goods.
The big shock was the "basket" where I was able to scrape together meagre volumes of several fruits even though the bulk of the basket was apples and redcurrants. By using large areas of redcurrants to cover the surface and adding the other fruit to decorate on top, I made the most my meagre offerings. Despite being up against apricots, mulberries and figs, I pulled a second behind someone with 30 years of winnings. :j
Have to say the winner was generous with her advice earlier but I realised after the judge's comments that sorting out of duff berries and attention to covering the whole surface paid off. Could have done a much better job now I understand the rules but would have got the same award.
Really only did it because I did not have enough of anything to exhibit in the individual classes but it paid off.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

I think St Fagans have an Apple Weekend on 25–26 October? Check if they have any specialist identifiers going or  head over the border into the Marches where there will almost certainly be identifying sessions?
There are a lot of apples that can be picked in September and October but are not ready to eat until January - March. Belle de Boskoop, Chilver's, Nancy Jackson etc. The old folks did not rely on cold storage; they grew a range of varieties that became edible between August and May if kept in a cool room.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Cars are always fixable, but I suppose you mean at a sensible cost.:)
Mine almost passed its MoT today, much to my surprise, needing only two flexible brake pipes, so half an hour on the ramp while I had another short walk. I have no idea what it cost, because no one felt like paperwork, so I haven't received the actual MoT but it'll no doubt arrive in a few days. :rotfl:
As for the van's brake work, that was £300, but there was a power cut, so I couldn't pay for it either!(different garage....owner has a van the same as mine and understands them
