After our incident with the rotten lintel on Friday, we strongly suggested concrete lintels, and leave a gap at the front so a think strip of oak can be placed infront of the lintel etc..

With the thick rubble filled walls it's sometimes 2 lintels, CTC. One on each wall (if you follow what I mean).
Depending on what finish you want on either face you can use wood on one & concrete on the other. For instance, unless you want to see a wooden beam on the outside of the building when finished that face can have a concrete lintel & be stone or cement covered.

    I know what you mean.

stonemason didn't say anything about lintels on the outside wall, only that some of the 'fan' shaped stones above the windows have dropped, and will need to be replaced.

Will try and take some pics tonight of the collapsed inside window lintel/wall and post them tomorrow ( staying up there tonight)

Ah yes, forgot. :o You have brick headers. Are they on all the windows/doors? They used to be self-supporting but nowadays I think it depends on what's happening behind them & how wide the openings are as to whether they need to attach to a lintel.

The hedging is all replanted and shows no sign of distress this morning. :) How are your piggies, CTC?

Forgot to mention, we're having a caravan parked here permanently and plumbed in to barn electrics and the small septic tank which hasn't been used yet.

No one will live in it and it won't really be visible to anyone else. Are we supposed to get permission? It's only a touring caravan. The people who were here before us had a similar one, though the connections to services were more.. er... ad hoc.

You would be best to check with someone like the Planning Portal, Dave.

I think (but don't take my word as gospel) that, if it is for a use allowed on your land (agricultural restrictions being met & being used, say, for storage of agricultural things or ag workshop) that you should be OK.
It's if, in any way, it looks like it could be for human habitation or might fall foul of change of use for your land (eg used as office for non-ag business) that they'd come down like a ton of bricks.

As I said, best to check with the experts, though.
